It’s interesting that you say this. We are having our basement finished right now and our contractor and his wife recently moved back from BC. They moved out there and basically nobody would accept them and were huge assholes because people from Ontario dared move into their neighbourhood.
There are assholes everywhere. This guy on the bus, these people in that neighbourhood…

It’s interesting you say this. I can’t speak for the rest of BC, but I know Victoria can be very, very cliquey. Most people blame it on born and bred Victorians, like there’s something inherently anti-social about being brought up on an island. I don’t buy it though. We have had such a population boom over the last 10 years that barely anyone I meet is actually ‘from’ here. Why do you think i moved to Whitby? Oh wait… it’s because you can’t buy a run down semi detached in Toronto for under $450,000.

I hear you on that. If people were giving your friends a hard time for moving here it’s because even 70 year old, 1200 sq ft crack shacks held together by asbestos are selling for 450000. My girlfriend and I have been looking for months and even as a builder I can’t find anything worth fixing up in town.

Never in a million years. Not that I have much against the area itself, but my life in town, as is my girlfriends. I would sooner hang myself then deal with that commute every day. And its going to get a lot, lot worse before it gets any better.
I have a friend who bought new off happy valley in 2006. Now he’s trying to sell, and every tiny POS spec home that gets thrown up in that area now is just devaluing his place. He’s screwed.
At least you’re reasonably settled there. You’ve got a young family, I’m sure a stable job etc, I wouldn’t imagine you would be needing to move any time soon?
We can look at this a couple of ways.

Hooray for the neutering of society. 100 years ago, pansies like this guy wouldn’t have done this because they knew that their asses would be unceremoniously hauled off the bus by some of their fellow citizens who weren’t going to stand for their poor behavior. Now, they know that they’re likely safe from being taught any actual lesson, because people’s fear of getting in trouble is greater than their desire to enforce social standards. Civilization!
