Indurain was not a great climber. He lost time in the mountains

actually, that is a myth. Although indurain never won individual mountain stages during the years he won the tour, his winning margins as a whole were greater than the time he gained in the TT’s for most, if not all of his tour wins. He gained time on his rivals in the mountains, while the others might win one day, and lose 5 or 10 minutes the next.

Indurain had the ability to win the individual mountain stages had he wanted to, but that never fit into his overall strategy.

Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, Lemond, Indurain, Armstrong…all of them have been great climbers AND great TTers. ALL of their great rivals fell short in one or the other discipline, relative to these guys…

Actually, I would class a young Fignon in that category as well. (early 80’s)
