Thought I would branch out and do some TT races next year.
I’m probably missing something obvious but I can’t seem to find any in Georgia. Maybe I’m using the wrong search criteria.
Anybody have suggestions on where to look.

Georgia Cup sponsors several TT’s and there’s always the Silver Comet TT. My club south of Atlanta ran one last summer too.
The Tundra Time Trial on the Silver Comet Trail comes up each February. It’s a blast. The Georgia Cup series used to have some great TT events, but now their only TTs are little 7 mile jobs that are part of weekend omniums … not worth the money or time to drive for just a 7 mile event. The Gwinett Touring Club puts on a few TTs. They’re rather casual, but the course is really fantastic and that’s a fun group of folks.
There’s a four-race series up I-85 in Greenville, SC each year (put on by the Greenville Spinners). It’s a 10-mile race on what I guarantee is the crappiest TT course you’ll ever race (two RR track crossings that’ll knock your fillings out, and they’re nothing compared to all the other bumps and potholes in the road) and yet … it’s still fun!
Asheville, NC has a couple of good TTs and I think there are a few up in Chattanooga and Knoxville areas.
I’m just across the border in SC and I’ve resorted to doing a lot of triathlon relays to get my TT fix. They’re a lot of fun and they provide the opportunity to TT some longer distances. I love TTing 56 miles and have done a few 112 milers!
Thanks for the info. I’m going to go ahead and sign up for the silver comet race.
The relay suggestion is a great idea.
I want to get more events in on the bike. So that’s a good way to go.
Thanks for bringing up Gwinnett Touring Club(http://www.gtcbike.org/). We had a 22.2 mile TT today on a great course with almost no traffic. The club has TT’s throughout the year. Sometimes we have a TTT on a 48 mile 1 loop course which is great. Depending who shows up, you could be going against GA State TT Champion.
I agree with you, that they are not many opportunities for longer TT events.
SC state tt champion, too. Or you could be motorpacing in the wake of a soon-to-be masters national champion on your way to a course record. ![]()
State championship is longer, I think 20K? .
Georgia cup had a TT every race weekend as part of the omnium, probably 8 a year but the last e-mail I got from georgia cup stated they were cutting most of their racing back and doing just criteriums this year.
When is your next event?
Oh yes! I forgot about that speed demon across the border in SC! I need to talk the guys in to having a TTT and get you, Dan, Brendan, and Shawn on a team and do the 48 mile loop! Just dont let Shawn take a wrong turn!
I did not recognize you there with the new handle! Have you got that Trek SC dialed in yet?
Looks like its going to be in January. When the date is confirmed, I’ll let you know. Looks like they want to do a older course which will have more traffic and hills. This one is around 21 miles.
Its amazing how accomplished the GTC group is considering how its really a somewhat loosely organized group of people that enjoy riding together, rather than a hardcore racing club. I haven’t been around for many years but we have 2 national champions (one for multiple nations) , 5 or 6 state champions, an Armed forces champions, a guy who is riding for the BMC under 23 pro team. Thats just from my memory, I suspect there have been more.
Rex,
I did the one with Brendan and Dan what … 2 years ago? What a total blast! It truly was like motorpacing to sit in behind Brendan. He stayed on the front all but maybe two miles. What an animal! Fastest 46 or 48 miles I ever did, for sure!
Very mixed feelings on the Trek SC. It’s amazing and amazingly aggravating at the same time. I’m having fun in the off-season building up a very old (literally the oldest in the US from what I’m told) Cervelo P3 with updated components. Don’t know how fast she is yet, but she’s fun to ride and so low-maintenance compared to my “superbikes.” She sure is fun to train on.
How’s it going with you? How was your 2011?
If our family gathering hadn’t started at noon today, I’d probably have been to your TT. Sorry I had to miss (not that I’m in any shape for a 20-something mile TT right now anyway).
Its been an up and down year for me. First part of year was great! I worked on my running and finished on the podium for the Xttera Trail Run series and got top 10 finish in age group in Seaside School 1/2 marathon. I did one sprint tri and finished middle of the pack. Second 1/2 of year I’ve been going from one injury to the next with no racing and very little training. So, that new bike has not been broken in yet!
My focus now is the Tundra TT, if it doesn’t snow or ice that day! The new bike is great. My only issue is with the Adamo Race saddle. I just cant get it adjusted to where the 2 prongs don’t irritate me. I just started back riding so I’m going to ride it on a regular basis for a couple of weeks to see if that helps. I’m thinking I need a little bit of seat time on it to get use to it. If that doesn’t work, I’ll try one of the Cobb saddles.
If you decide to do the GTC TT in January on the old Harbins course; your welcome to camp out at my house. I’m only a couple of miles from the course.
Rex, I know some people drill holes in the bottom of the prongs then use a zip tie to move them closer together. May be something to try.
If you do ditch the saet, let me borrow it. I’ve never tried one. I still use a road saddle, just haven’t found a “tri” saddle I like better. The Cobb was close, but I found that it had one position. It was pretty good in that position, but for an IM race sooner or later I need to shift around a bit.
Rex,
Thanks for the offer on the GTC TT. Unfortunately, I read on the GTC e-mail list thingy this morning that the Harbins course has more traffic and, when I think of your definition of traffic relative to what I’m used to, then think about MORE of it … well, I might just sit out 'till the next one on yesterday’s course. That’s a very nice course.
As Shawn said, if you zip tie the prongs at the front of the Adamo, it can help. At least it gives it a different feel that you might like better. That made it tolerable for me, but I never used it for anything but 40k or shorter TTs where I needed it to be UCI legal. You should consider trying a Cobb V-flow Max. I know saddles tend to be a very individual thing, but I’ve recommended the V-flow Max to a whole lot of TT and Triathlete folks and I honestly can’t think of a single one who didn’t say it was the best saddle they ever used. I don’t know if Cobb is still doing the 180 day money back guarantee, but if they are, there’s really nothing to lose for trying it. If you decide to try it, let me know and I can help you with some tips about how to set it up properly. It’s a little unique and it feels a little odd when you first throw a leg over it. Then you roll down on the aerobars and it’s, “oh yea! This is IT!”
I use the Specialized Romin on my road bikes and I’ve been trying it lately on one of my TT bikes. It’s a wee bit more harsh than riding the V-flow Max, but I like it, too.
