TT Helmets - Do you sacrifice aero gains in hot temperatures?

I’m racing a Oly in Holland in September, so the weather is likely to be warm (+20deg C). I’ve been looking for a helmet and came across this good deal on PlanetX http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/HECAKROTT/carnac-kronus-time-trial-helmet

Just wondering if the heat will be a big impact since the venting is non-existent. I’m shooting for 1h05m on the bike and I sweat a decent amount.

I have an Evade from last year that I might use instead.

I don’t find heat to be an issue with TT helmets, unless you’re climbing for extended periods of time (low speed). And even then it’s not an issue if it’s only 20°C.

I am from Holland, and would not be able to subscribe the above statement.

However, there is a lot of discussion about aerohelmets and heat, and with heat I mean >30°, maybe humid heat. Some helmets (for example the Giro Aerohead) are considered by people to be hot. It is very personal, I rode also already with this helmet in the heat but did not have any problems.
Also, one hour is not very long. And if it is in Holland, you can put anything on your head. If you want to be surer, buy a helmet and train with it this summer, especially when it is hot.

I just used a Giro Aerohead for the first time in a very hot and humid TT. While not quite as cool as my PO9 it wasn’t unbearable. Now, the fogging of the visor was another issue…

Thanks for the info.

Good point rider hadn’t thought of that. Lots of people riding 70.3 and IM with visors though?

Heat and discomfort will have a big impact. I now have three helmets to choose from that range from poor ventilation but super aero to great ventilation and good aero properties. Based on race day temperature, humidity and race distance I pick the one that I believe will give me the fastest time. Having a helmet that is 10 watts faster but makes you miserable and dehydrated is not the fastest. The three that I have in my arsenal are the Aerohead, Giro Advantage 2 and the Scott Cadence Plus.

Can’t comment on the heat other than to say an hour in 20ish-deg C heat shouldn’t be terribly taxing.

I’ve read good things about that helmet. I was gonna buy one, but it’s not certified by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, so it’s not allowed by USAT.

I have poor vision and don’t wear contacts. First thing I do in T1 is take off my optically corrected goggles and put on glasses. To combat fogging, I treat the lenses with Rain-X

Are we worried about riding with an aero helmet in less than 70 degree temps? Did I miss something?

I grew up in Holland (let’s call it The Netherlands actually), and now live in a subtropical climate.
I’ll race my Giro Advantage 2 any temperate.
Actually racing a 10 mile (16 km) time trial Sunday afternoon, it’ll be 32 Celsius/90 Fahrenheit, and it’ll feel like 40 Celsius / 100 Fahrenheit with the 100% humidity.
No problems at all, just wear it a few times to get used to it. It’ll be just fine

You’re missing that he’s in northern Europe where 3 days just above 80 are called a heat wave.

AV I crack out the vest and sunscreen when it hits 65! 70 is tropical

Its hot as fuck right now in the west. Get out in the heat if you want to get used to it…

That said I’m loving tomorrow’s 7am start in Edmonton. Will be out of the house for about 23-26 hours…

I’ve been using my Kask Bambino in over 30deg C in races without being hot. I was born and raised in Sweden, so heat and humidity kills me. Never had a problem with it with the Bambino…
