TT helmets at IMAZ?

Did you notice that there where a lot of people, Pros, Ager’s, wearing TT helmets during the race. Is it really that effective for such a long race??? I wonder how hot ones cranium must get in those temps???

.

not hot at all. I wore one , however the temp were pretty cool and the wind was colling things off

A lot of TT helmets all day… I have a message for all the fat AG’s with TT helmets… you guys just look silly… (yeah, I know I’ll get flamed by this…)

Yea, they look silly. but what's not silly about this sport? Men shaving their legs? Skin tight spandex clothes covered with advertising that you paid to wear? Training more hours a week for no real payoff, than you spend working to make money? Having a triathlon coach? Being a triathlon coach? You spend 8, 9, 10 hours suffering hoping to win the prize; the right to do it again half way around the world (what's second prize, doing it again twice?). When you look at it the whole thing is pretty silly, wouldn't you say? But the TT helmets are faster. I don't know how much but judging by my downhill testing last year between a LG Prologue and a new Specialized helmet, the helmet makes a bigger improvement than a lot of the stuff we absolutely have to have.

SAC, it was amazing to see how many people had them then rode them with the tail 5-7 inches away from their back. All I could think of was put your tail on your back your costing yourself time.

good job Brian!
did a good job out there.

May-Lise wanted to drive back home yesterday (so did Olaf and I to ride on open roads with no traffic)…so no party tonight at your place (not planning an other night drive).

While I wasn’t there yesterday, nor do I own a TT helmet (I will when I begin racing), why flame those who aren’t the fastest? Perhaps they are wearing them, have the best aero equipment, etc. for their own good? Heck, if they suck as bad as I do, it’s easy to allow someone a fraction of inch to make excuses for you…

…this way, knowing I have all the best equipment…it takes any possibility of equipment out of the SUCK picture and I can fully explain that my time blows because I don’t train enough, I eat like crap, and frankly…I’M JUST FRIGGIN SLOW!

…but then again…when I do get faster I know it’s not because of any new equipment

Actually this guy looks pretty cool with it:

Hey SAC,

Why pick on the fat guys, WTF??? Just because everyone is not lean and mean like you ( albeit with chicken legs), HA.

I view it the same as a disk, if you have a disk on your bike then you should be fast enough to NOT get passed, if you have a TT helmet then dont get freaking passed.

Congrats to you and sergio for a fine race, I can only imagine that you will get more athletes signing up after this showing, how much do you charge??? HA,

although it was said in a typical SAC’s tone, I think he meant that if you have a big frontal area (a nice way to say that you’re not exactly shaped like a bike rider), then putting an aero helmet will not make you any faster. Not to mention that the thing will likely prevent cooling and in general, big guys struggle in the heat, so no need to make it worse.

I saw several ‘big guys’ with aero helmets. They were riding with their knees way out there…tuck the knees in, get rid of the helmet…

but I agree with you, SAC has chicken legs

This Forum is too predictable… I actually predicted that YOU would reply to this one…

Anyway, just would like to add that I’m the same coach I was on friday… and that I charge the same

still charging the same…and this is your problem

still charging the same…and this is your problem
No… his problem is that his services are free :stuck_out_tongue:

Do you offer the slowtwitch discount???

.

Yeah, I look silly, I’m a Clyde to boot, but it is all about taking away the degrees of freedom.

Aero helmet - check

Aero bike - check

Disk wheel - check

Skintight clothing - check.

Low rolling resistance tires - check

Damn, I just ran out of excuses - it must be me.

P.S. Congrats on IMAZ. You must be proud of your star pupil. Well deserved for both of you.

If you’re serious drop me a PM. If not reply here so that I can call you fat again…

And thanks for the congrats Hookem’

The SAC is slowly gaining experience coaching dumbasses after being sheltered with guys like Sergio. Well… at least one…

Got to hold this bike today… I was AMAZED by it’s weight in racing configuration… a beautiful ride to boot… and the guy that rides it kind of deserves to ride such a great bike

Go search Gordo’s forum for reports on his recent wind tunnel experience. The helmet was the ONLY change that made a statistically significant change in his (already good) drag numbers. On the other hand, Bjorn A showed no significant improvement between an aero helmet and a standard helmet.

The difference? Gordo’s head is in the air stream while Bjorn’s is in line with the rest of his body. The layman’s conclusion…if your head sits significantly into the air stream, as most folks heads do (since not very many of us ride in Bjorn positions), then an aero helmet probably gives you a statistically significant improvement.

Of course the trade off is that aero helmets can be hot. Who cares how much improvement you might see if you cook yourself in the process.

Frankly, I’d say try one of them…see if you can handle the lack of venting/cooling…

Oh, and back to a thread I posted on Saturday…if you can’t keep yourself in the aero position in the first place…don’t worry about the miniscule improvement a helmet might afford you…work on improving the large hole you are trying to punch in the air first.
