TSS calculations different at TP and GarminConnect?

By chance I saw that the same session that I uploaded to Trainingpeaks and GarminConnect had different TSS values? A 3h bike ride has 150 TSS on TP and 200 TSS on GC? Which should I rely on?

Did you set your FTP in both?
A difference that large would imply one or both have not been set.

Thanks, I thought it set itself on GC, since it keeps track of my best 20-min power outputs. I have now changed it, but I guess it doesn’t update old sessions. Will look out for this in the future. Thanks!

I had that same issue a while back. I reset my FTP in Garmin Connect to match TP, and was a little dissapointed it didn’t correct the older events. I thought about deleting the event in Garmin Connect and then resynching it from my device, but got lazy and never tried it to see if it works.

Why would it? Surely you would not expect a change in your FTP to be applied retrospectively. That would obviously adjust all your previous workout TSS. While I appreciate in your case you may have liked it to have updated, it sounds a little strange to be disappointed that it didn’t!

Thanks

power analysis software needs the ability to apply multiple FTP values multiple date ranges at any time.

If garmin connect can’t do that, it is a toy.

Or perhaps the user should have the right FTP recorded in the first place.

Agreed, and that is the point I was trying to make but probably didn’t articulate clearly. I had my FTP correctly set in my Garmin 500 and in TP, and didn’t realize I had to separately set it in Garmin Connect. I mistakenly thought the FTP settings from the 500 would import to Garmin Connect with the activity details.

No, it is absolutely not acceptable software design in any case to make it impossible to correct data input mistakes. Imagine a word processor with no delete key. That is absurd.

But in this case it isn’t even always mistake. If I test my FTP today and find it is 20 watts higher than before, that didn’t happen that day, it happened a while ago, so you are going to want to update your FTP at some date in the past, and you want your TSS on those dates to reflect that.

I don’t really think Garmin Connect is something anyone should use, in general.
