I think it’ll get worse before it gets better.
The best case scenario isnt going to happen but its:
- whats left of the normal/rational republicans vote for biden - essentially saying that the 25% of normal republicans are not going to be held hostage/tied to the the far right. Destroying the MAGA movement/everyone who argues that “they dont want to vote for trump but he wins in a crowded primary/the democrats made us do it.” Unfortunately, the crazies in the GOP have the power (which is different than the democrats where the center - joe manchin crowd - has the power).
The worst case.
2) Trump wins. Emboldening the loud minority. We withdraw from NATO, enact a lot of policies that have short term benefits but long term detriments, lots of safe guard railings are removed, etc. Trump stays president for extra terms (because we should disregard the constitution and you should win at the polls). This is followed by trump winning another term, dying, a democrat becomes president - all the long term detriments hit, another authoritarian rises
But, the US survived a civil war already. I think we can survive this as well.
Yes, we did survive. But at what price?
3/4 of a million dead in that war.
Well if one of the above transpires, so far 6 LR posters will get a visit from the Secret Service.

The point here is not to discuss the cost though. It was to say we did survive.
Unless your take is that the alternative was better? Letting the south secede so that Blacks can continue being enslaved?
Well if one of the above transpires, so far 6 LR posters will get a visit from the Secret Service.
You mean, if he wins?
Best case / worst case for whom? The American people?
Best case: he’s trialed, found guilty and rots in jail, whining and bitching about being treated unfairly after spending his entire life lying, conning and bullying people.
Worst case: he gets reelected and continues on the same path of destroying democracy in America.
Your situations are not exclusive. (unlikely they throw him in jail) but if Georgia does, he can still get elected. Can’t pardon himself, so I guess he runs the country from Jail.
I understand your thoughts, and there is a pendulum of discourse. But I would say we still have festering wounds from even that time. See, Nikki Haley, New Hampshire. Trump was sadly a new inflection point.

That would be the epitome of a American reality show where a president runs a country from prison.
We withdraw from NATO
Congress just put up some guardrails there. The 2024 Defense Authorization Act includes a new law that requires a supermajority of the Senate or a full act of Congress to withdraw from NATO. On paper, it’s out of the hands of unilateral executive action.
And even though there are very non-zero odds of the GOP taking both the White House and a majority in both chambers of Congress, worst case it’s going to be very thin majorities in those two chambers. Certainly not enough for the MAGA faction of Congress to start ramming through MAGA bills at will.
Of course populist demogogues have a way of not caring what’s “on paper…”
But a strong majority of Americans believe NATO membership is a good thing, and I think Trump’s method is to throw a lot of stuff up against the wall to see what sticks, and a 2nd-term Trump might find that “withdraw from NATO!” doesn’t get a good “trending” response.
Just a guess, though.

That is most definitely not my take. My take is that saying we “survived”, it ain’t saying much if the price was/is enormously heavy.
For example, we “survived” one trump presidency but the damage it did (especially to the unity and sanity of our electorate) was irreversible. Our country is in some ways unrecognizable.
You can’t take this separately and ignore the alternative. I’m certainly not saying that it didn’t cost a think. So, really not sure what point you’re trying to make.
I wrote “we survive”, not “eh, wasn’t that bad”. I’ve posted enough here that you know my stance. We survive, despite the cost is still better than we are dead.

It’s funny that you should say that. I stared at my screen for 5 minutes before deciding to type the version that I did.
Having said that, don’t be surprised if Joe wins that Maga shirts change to “Long Live Brandon - KJB”
Of course, is Trump wins, they’ll go back to whining about how mean the left is toward their leader.
Yeah. Maybe not even leaving nato but defunding it enoigh it doesn’t matter.
But long term my biggest fears is trump does things for short term gains, leading to someone else holding the bag for an avalanche.
Trump has run his businesses exactly like this. The USA will be the one filing for bankruptcy. Trump said this on multiple issues while he was president, such as the tax cuts - which everyone said would lead to inflation. When the inflation hit, people blamed Biden - makes no sense.
Trump is a president in the same way a GM of a football team on the hot seat reacts. Not caring about the long term future of the team but is willing to trade the next 3 years first round picks to go 9-7 and save his job for a year

If those shirts come out, l ain’t buying one. I don’t like cults anywhere on the political spectrum.
(But they won’t come out)
But maybe Joe Rogan will run for prez soon? He’s got a hell of a loyal following, so l hear.

Given people’s understanding of how the government works and micro/macroeconomics, it’s not a surprise. Trump has simple(ton) messages that seem to appeal to many. And given how binary this country has become, at least at the surface, here we are.
I say at the surface because I still believe that if we could spend time talking with people individually, we aren’t all that different. Maybe I’m naive.
Something I find interesting about this thread in general is no one has said the best case is trump winning or Biden losing.
Ah. Just wait for TylerTri and his buddies to come over and post here.
It’s more so what is the best outcome if trump wins? No more work agenda? More tax cuts for the rich? Stop spending money on Ukraine?
Other than social issues (which I don’t really care about - or think the actually impact anything), I don’t even know what the “best†case means.
I don’t think Biden was put forth any major policies that have hurt America. So “Biden not being president anymore†wouldn’t make sense.
Well if you listen to the die-hard Trump supporters, they are buying that Biden is responsible for the current cost of homes, prices of goods etc (worldwide I suppose).
So in their mind, changing the president will have an impact…
