Despite breaking his collarbone in two places in yesterday’s stage 1 crash, American Tyler Hamilton (CSC) has decided to continue in the Tour, according to Danish TV2. Team CSC’s press officer Brian Nygaard said that “Hamilton slept badly last night because of the pain, but he will do whatever he can to stay in the race as long as possible.” Hamilton has been given painkillers to try and cope with the pain.
Well he finished with the main pack today, and the reports I’ve seen were of a hairline fracture - I think he can finish. He might not be a podium contender (although I wouldn’t rule him out entirely), but this is le Tour - and the centenary at that. He’s in it for as long as he can hang, or until he starts to slow his team down (TTT).
Speaking of grit - I hope he wears something to protect his teeth this time around. After the Giro he finished with a broken shoulder he had to have all his teeth capped since he ground them all down clenching and grinding trying to finish the race.
