Truck repair question

So my 2000GMC sierra went in for transfer case motor replacment and I am told the case piled up! I trust these mechanics so no worries. The truck was stuck in four wheel drive, would not shift out. It was the end of the day so they left it. Here are my questions:

  1. can the transfer case be changed back to two wheel drive, the motor could not do it. 2) And if so can I drive it like that?
  2. is it worth spending 2000.00 to fix a truck worth 4000.00.

New truck. Unless you have a very very REAL need for 4 wheel drive, crushing cars for example or mudding, get a new truck with two wheel drive. I have taken cars into and out of places that people say only a super duper 4x4 could survive. Also GMC? Be a man and get a Ford or Toyota.

Transfer case is easy to swap out. Call around to a few auto wreckers and get a decent used one. You should be able to find one for less than $500 without much effort.

The answer to question #1,2 is maybe; the guys working on your truck should be able to tell you. Answer to question #3 is no.

While i cannot answer with specificity on your 00GMC I can tell you the following:

My 1979 International Scout had its transfer case blow up or burn out or whatever the specific automotive diagnosis was while I was in the process of moving from Ft. Benning to Ft. Drum. I clunked and clanked my way into Ft. Bragg, NC to a friend’s house to download my shit and took it to some recommended specialist & had the transfer case swapped out and it drove for another 20k miles or so until it lost oil pressure and i had to dump the Scout :frowning: Man, now that was a great 4WD and i sincerely mean it–if i’d have had the disposable income at the time i’d have had the truck totally rebuilt and be driving it today. But sadly, it’s gone the way of the buffalo.

4WD just means you get further in before you get stuck.

2WD gets much better mileage and has less mechanically to go wrong.

end of my knowledge and experience on the matter and I wish you luck–let us know how it turns out and what u decided.

When my Honda Element (paid off many years ago) finally gives up the ghost I’ll probably go with a pickemuptruck. & right now it’d probably be a F150 but I’m hoping for many more years/miles on the Toaster.

I wonder if the shop would be willing to install a used one? I will have to check.

I do not even want a truck. I really want a BMW 335xi, but I need the truck for towing the boat and trailer from time to time.

Why 4 x 4? Have you ever tried to pull a 20 foot fishing boat out of a muddy boat launch on a wet rainy day? Have you ever woke up to a foot of snow on the driveway and streets?

sometimes I am leaning toward that new truck, but man I do not want 800.00 a month payments for a vehicle that is not one I really want. I will look into the used transfer case tommorrow, and hopefully drive it in rear wheel drive for now.

They should. If not, it won’t be hard to find someone who will.

Call a few auto salvage places in the morning. It will help to have your VIN handy, and/or the actual model of your transfer case.

Thankyou, I will.

My wife says NO to the new ford F150. How much does a guy need to make to be able to buy a new truck?

A Toyota? That made me laugh.

I’m assuming you mean that in a stereotypical manner. - That being my assumption, Toyota does make a truck worthy of being in the same class at the Dodge or Ford or even GMC. I believe all Toyotas are “light duty”. If you want a truck that fits the “mold” of heavy duty, super duty, etc - you need a 2500/3500 or 250/350 - the 150, 1500 and Toyotas are basically cars with a bed to put your wife’s flower garden stuff in.

As for questions 1 and 2. Here is the deal with anything like that. When you make modifications to how the manufacturers have designed the vehicle, there will be problems down the road. You can switch to 2 wheel drive, but you will still be spending $2,000 or more (over time).

To truly switch over, you have to pull the transfer case totally out, pull the front drive shafts, replace the 2-wheel drive front hubs, and put in a new driveshaft (I would never suggest a used driveshaft). It’s not that difficult, but very time consuming if you do it and pricey if someone else does.

If you need the truck, I would try to find a good used transfer case and see if your mechanics can put it in for you.

As for question 3, that’s all up to you!

We have a winner.

One of my vehicles is a Toyota Tacoma. It is a great truck for light duty, but I don’t really think of it as a truck. My brother’s Duramax is a truck…

Used GM parts are easier to pick up than dog shit in the winter, and swapping out a TC isn’t much harder.

The OP shouldn’t have any trouble getting this resolved today.

Update:

The front drive axle has been pulled and I have quotes.

Used transfer case installed - 1320.00. No warranty, the TC comes from a truck with more km’s than mine.

New (factory refurbished) TC - 2000.00 plus labour + 2400.00 and tax = 2640.00.

Now I could drive it like it is until I decide on a new or newer vehicle.

Either way I need to fix this truck if I am going to sell it for anything worth while.

So the price of a used TC is~$700? That seems pretty high. Did you source out the replacement, or did your shop do it?

Do you live in Saskatchewan?

Yes, I am in Sask. sshh, do not tell anyone.

Actually the used on the shop priced me out was 1600.00. The one I priced out from the autobody was 800.00. The refurbished one from Edmonton is 1700.00

I just test drove a 2011 ram, with the 5.7 and 3.92 rear diff. I think I will be buying that truck.

As for my GMC I think I will pick up the used TC for 800.00 and having my repair guy replace it for 300.00 and then I will sell the truck.
