I recently started wearing contacts (or glasses as emergency backup). About 4 weeks into it. Obviously, because of the nature of triathlon training, contacts are more practical than glasses. But I’ve noticed that the wind on my rides bothers me. And on my last ride, what I thought was just a few moments of aggravating wind in the eyes was actually me losing my left contact. Granted, I guess because of sweaty Oakley’s, I didn’t notice much vision difference. My question, do I save the contacts for after the workout, or, is there some trick to keep this from happening over and over? Has this happened to any of you guys?
I wear contacts pretty much just in training as I do not like the hassle of them for day to day wear. I have never had a contact slip out while riding. Even with no sunglasses on. I think this is a fit issue and that the contacts do not properly fit your eye. Go back to your eye doctor as this is not normal.
The only time I ever have trouble with my contacts is when I forget my sunglasses on a ride – they get dried out in the wind. I wonder if maybe your sunglasses fit might be part of the problem, although, like suparuki said, your contacts might not be right for you.
i had similar issues. i started using Rudy Equionox Masks. they are an eyeglass with a gasket but then also a strap to keep it all tight. very comfy. very nice. breathes nice. been using those for 2, 3 years now. 1 year ago, got Lasik, which, FYI, is probably the BEST thing i ever did. i used the rudy equinox masks thereafter for a year just to ensure i protected the eyes as much as possible. now, i’m back to oakleys. but, yo umight consider one of the masks. i had , hate saying it, like 4o f them. just sold 2 of them, have 1 more i am selling as well. if you want to try it for a ride or two, let me know. u can always send it back. really not trying to be solicitous, etc. but figured i’d mention it.
i tried all kinds of glasses with gaskets to keep the turbulent air flow in the eye socket nonexistent. the rudy was the only one that actually worked well.
trust me, i like my oakelys more, but i also like seeing.
Thanks, let me check it out on the Rudy website. Not sure what they look like. I’ll get back to you soon.
I had the same problem… Lost four lenses so far this year while using the cheap Nashbar frameless glasses. Haven’t had a problem since upgrading to the new Oakley Radar.
Makes me wonder if some of those exciting wipeouts in the timetrials at the TdF might be due to some cyclist sqinting and getting blurry at just the wrong time!
Morpheus…sounds like you need to invest in a better pair of sunglasses. Maybe Tifosi ($40) or Rudy’s. I wear contacts and I always have to wear sunglasses. If I don’t, I have problems too.
maybe. use oakley half jacket right now. interested in the tifosi that is rimless at the top. The pair I have now causes me to crank my head up to see farther ahead, hurting my neck over 3-4 hours. Will have to test some out to see if they help my contacts situation.
Thanks for the input from all of you guys.
