Trochanteric Bursitis (2)

Sucks. That is all.

Jump sign tests for it…thats all I have for now (first semester med student)
.

Going for a shot on Monday and hopefully that will be take are of it with some rest.

Stretch and find the cause. That is the only way to get better and stop it happening again.

Bump.

I’ve come down with a case of this at a bad time relative to upcoming races on the schedule.

I’d like to know the results of the “shot + rest”. Any news?

What was the “Jump sign” to test for this?

I’m in rest mode now. I try to avoid med’s as much as possible, but in this case I’m going with a steady stream of NSAID (ibuprofen) for a few days.

There were 3 factors that likely contributed to this situation in concert. (stopped swimming due to injury, started indoor cycling after 3 months of no pedaling, and started running outdoors again after a month or treadmill only).

OK, I’ll jump in to encourage you to see a good PT that works with cyclists, runners, tri-folks to get a thorough biomechanical evaluation. Typically, there is a cause for these things…be it alignment, weakness, imbalance (or, all of the above). You would be surprised how many triathletes I see that consider themselves very “strong” but end up being weak in their hips (or we find that these muscles fatigue quickly). Meds and injections can be fantastic tools to decrease the inflammation and pain. However, unless you address the underlying factors, there is a very good chance that the same or a similar problem will appear again in the future. Just my “two cents.”

After rest and a shot I felt great. Did 2 half marathons without an issue, have had good volume/power on the bike. No pain in the hip. All of a sudden about 2 weeks ago in the last 4 miles of a 60 mile bike I felt a little discomfort in my knee opposite the side of the bursitis. Got off when I was finished and could barely walk. Now I have a bad case of ITB syndrome in my L leg. What he says about strengthening the hips/glutes is the truth. I only had been foam rolling and stretching. I wish I started to work on strengthening those areas after the bursitis but I blew it off and now my first A race of the year (St. Croix) is going to be awash. I can’t run more than 20 minutes without pain. I have been doing it all too-ART, foam rolling, stretching, ice, nsaids, massages. Just took a week and a half off, ran today and pain came back. I keep doing the strengthening exercises so hopefully in a couple months I can get back on track. Moral of the story? Figure out what is causing it and fix it, the shots and all that other stuff is only a temporary fix.

Thanks for the updates. I will take the advice to work on strengthening excercise. My doctor is going to hook me up with a program.

Do you mind sharing your symptoms? I have a ton of problems going on with my hip, and this may be one of them. Thanks!

I have pain on the outside/front of my right hip. The pain builds over time as I run, and it is made worse when running hills. It’s not enough pain to stop me in my tracks at this point. It is uncomfortable to lay on my right side at times when it is really flared up. It seems to “set up” when I sit still which causes it to hurt more (initially) when I stand up, but then moving around helps calm it down.

If the pain you are having is on the inside of your hip (i.e. groin), then that is more of a hip flexor issue (which can also be dealt with by stretching and strengthening via exercise).

It only happens when I transition from biking to running. It builds to the point where it feels like I’m being stabbed on the outside of the hip with a screwdriver, and the leg can no longer drive/fire.

You any better now? Got a dx on it yet? Interested as I have similar issues. Thanks.

I’ve been getting treatment on the SI joint, and that’s been helping. The doctor also shotgun blasted my entire SI/piriformis/trochanter with prolotherapy. So many pokes in my ass I felt like Murphy’sLaw.

I’ve definitely been improving, especially now that the SI is stabilized.
