Old Guys Who Get Fat in the Winter
While my wife was riding RAGBRI this past year she noticed several guys wearing jersey’s that said: “Old Guys Who Get Fat in the Winter.” So how do you avoid becoming one of “them?” It is hard to get time to ride, especially when it is getting dark so early. I try and commute to work as much as possible and now I need my lights on my return trip. And it is getting colder and colder.
Of course there is the pool. You can still go early to the pool and work out with the master’s team. That helps and maybe this is your year to finally work on that swimming stroke and truly become a swimmer. There is also running, but I find that the hard sport to do in the winter is cycling. It is colder, there is less light, and that is the challenge.
Most of you probably have some sort of trainer but most of the people I talk to despise their trainers. The idea of riding indoors just seems wrong. And to top it off it is very boring. Well have I got a solution for you. There are now on the market interactive trainers. They hook up to your computer and you can ride virtual courses that are amazingly realistic. I ride a Tacx I-Magic. It hooks to an old laptop and I have three options.

  1. I can ride in their virtual worlds. There are three virtual worlds I can ride in and I even have a steering unit where I navigate through the world. Below is is a screen shot of what you can see in the “fortius virtual world.” http://www.tristuff4less.com/NewsletterPics/fortiusScreenshot.jpg
  2. With this trainer they also have the option of “Real Life Video.” This is where I ride in famous places from around the world. I can ride Alp De Huez, or in South Africa, or my favorite lately has been to do the Tour of Flanders. Each of these “courses” were recorded onto digital video and what I see on my screen is the movement through the course. Below is a screenshot of one of the bike courses. Note that this is a real video file so you see an actual video that somebody took while driving a course. http://www.tristuff4less.com/NewsletterPics/RLVMilanSan.jpg
  3. Possibly my favorite is the chance to ride against other riders. There is a third party software called “Netathlon” that connects equipment to the computer. It then allows you to ride their courses or you can actually ride with other people from around the world in real time. Every weekend and now most weekday nights there are folks the ride and race online. I think I am a pretty good cyclist, but some of these guys are crazy fast. It might be that I am no spring chicken anymore and I at least tell myself that these guys must be in their 20’s. At least that is my excuse and I am sticking with it. Below is a screenshot of one of the Netathlon courses. http://www.tristuff4less.com/NewsletterPics/CharlesNetathlon.jpg
Anyway: We do carry all of these trainers in stock, so feel free to come check them out.
