Triathlons are the new marijuana

every one is doing them

well, everyone is still doing marijuana too, but i am in college it seems that in the last month all i have heard is people talking about how they want to do triathlons or want to train for triathlons, etc. My thoughts are the more crazies out there the merrier, but i was wondering what your thoughts were on our sport become so mainstream…and maybe even trendy…

“mainstream”, “trendy”-I don’t care-I did a race in Charlotte last weekend and one of the new things that struck me was the number of college kids competing with team associations (James Madison, Virginia Tech, UNC-W, UNC). I thought it was great and have already commented to several people that I think it is the next great thing in racing-even if I am 2X+ their age.

I think it’s great that more and more people are taking interest in the sport…it doesn’t make it mean less to me. I still get a big ol’ rush from lining up and giving it all I’ve got on race day - doesn’t matter who else is out there on the course. Have you ever watched a Danskin race? You’ll see ladies of every age, shape and size out there giving it their all - it doesn’t matter who they are or how fast they’re moving, the look of pure joy and determination on their faces is absolutely priceless. In a world where obesity is out of hand, I say ‘more power to ya’’ for having the cajones to get out there. It’s just like the big marathon boom of the past decade - suddenly, ‘anybody can do it’…it’s still a very personal and individual pursuit at the heart of it - that’s the beauty. Now…whatd’ya say we fire up a fatty and order Chinese?

I did not mean to sound degrading about people doing them, in fact i have been trying to get friends to join me for some time now. I actually think it is pretty cool that it is catching on with younger people…hell i am one of them

Now…whatd’ya say we fire up a fatty and order Chinese?

Damn, bro, that sounds good right about now.

Surely your college is teaching you the pitfalls of such generalizations…

Now…whatd’ya say we fire up a fatty and order Chinese?

Damn, bro, that sounds good right about now.
I’ll buy…

I haven’t smoked pot since beginning in triathlon. Things were a lot different back in the 70’s.

They should have invented triathlon sooner.

No need, I’m in the home of bud, Vancouver BC

A gro-op on every street. Really.

mmmmmmmm you made me do it… I wasn’t thinkin it, but a bud was just what I needed tonight! mucho gusto!

Today’s “mainstream” and “trendy” are tomorrow’s passe, so the boom we are seeing these days may not be there in a few years. Moreover, whereas people can easily, at least in monetary terms, climb the running ladder, triathlon will select out a lot of potential lifers because past a certain point it is no longer affordable. Those college teams are probably borrowing equipment and using mountain bikes, and a lot of those “kids” just won’t have the time or money to invest in triathlon for many years. And this is probably unfortunate. On the other hand, my daughter wouldn’t think it is unfortunate. The coach of her hockey team at Hamilton College requires all the players to participate in a local spring triathlon, either individually or as part of a team. Jane hates this (so much for apples not falling far from the tree…), and right now the only good thing in her mind about having a fractured ankle that she received sliding into the boards feet first is that she won’t have to participate in the triathlon. Wimpy hockey player!

I’m perfectly happy with the old marijuana.
