We will most likely be doing away with the half crazy distance next year as there doesn’t seem to be enough interest. I’ve been going over our athlete surveys and Sager will most definitely be staying (I will die on that hill, it was the entire reason for creating the race), but I might shorten it to eliminate some of the sections that seem to be excessively sandy. Doing so would also drop The Long One bike down to 26 miles, which is closer to a true Olympic. I’m guessing it will still have 3/4 to a mile of Sager, just enough for my entertainment as I try to get video of you guys riding it The athlete surveys have been a trip to read. I was telling our social media person that we should read out the meanest of them on IG or FB Reels this offseason, like the late night shows do with celebrities.
I was there this weekend and had a blast racing the Long/Oly. Sager was the highlight of the race for me. 2nd being the draft legal dynamics on the bike.
Please don’t nerf the course too much. Gravel courses where it’s fastest to be slightly “underbiked” on portions of it are the most fun.
I agree. I think part of the fun is the equipment selection. Do you roll a skinnier tire with less tread to go fast on 90% of the course, or do you go with something a little more aggressive that might be slower on the majority of the course but substantially faster on Sager, assuming you can ride where other people are walking?
One of my original ideas was to make it a choose-your-own-adventure (I loved those books as a kid). You can take a longer, more traditional route or Sager, with the routes balanced so that the average times are similar. However, you need to push pretty hard to get through the traditional route.
The results so far (the’ve skewed a bit towards keeping it in the last day or so compared to my original post):
Don’t change a thing
13.8% - Half
37.9 - Long
51.7% Total
Fun but too long
10.3% Half
13.8% Long One
24.1% - Total
That was dumb, get rid of it
3.4% - Half
20.7% - Long One
24.1% - Total
If you did race and haven’t filled out the form, I would appreciate it if you would, as it could significantly impact the event going forward.
Canada Man is a really cool event with a road bike and a trail run. Two distances offered–the long one looks really neat, but I did the short one and had a great experience: Canada Man / Woman
Lake Tahoe Triathlon which is very scenic does sprint, olympic, and half distance. Same with Donner Lake Tri.
Are you able to share your 2025 race date yet? Thanks.
Both of our gravel tris should be on the same weekend. We are finalizing approvals now.
Ugly Dog - 7/26
The Dirty Mitten - 9/20 and 9/21
Wow, so a month earlier than usual for the Dirty Mitten! Thank you.
Edit – I’m realizing you probably meant 9/20 and 9/21.
Correct… good catch! Knee deep in setting up for Rode to Hell this weekend, or at least that’s my excuse My staff would all revolt if we had it a week or two after MiTi!
