Was out to dinner this weekend at a pretty nice “new american bistro” type place down in Bethany Beach, DE. I was with my fiance and inlaws. They always like pointing out triathlon related stuff to me or make fun of the fact that I sneak a peek at every bike I ever see on the road (you do it!). Anyway, we were all dressed decently, considering we were at the beach, and in walks a group including at least one triathlete. Seemed like nice normal people–and the one guy is wearing a t shirt that reads “If triathlon were easy, it would be called football.” Personally, I’ve played both sports and agree, but I’m not a big fan of these kinds of shirts that puff out our chests and draw attention. Now, while I do wear my race t-shirts around doing housework or if I"m out running errands, etc., this got me thinking. So, what do people think about these shirts? I kind of liken it to “No Fear” shirts or “Baseball is life, the rest is just details.” I think they are annoying and stupid. I tend to think the kind of people who wear those are the types that get M-dot tatoos (I have a tattoo, but not an mdot). I know I will get flamed for that comment, but are t-shirts stupid in general, or is it me?
BTW, i’m sure the guy in question is perfectly cool and could smoke my ass in a race, but that’s beside the point.
You know, I keep seeing posts like this (race T-shirt etiquette, etc), and my basic question is: Why do you care what that dude is wearing? How, exactly, does a T-shirt go about "annoying you? It seems to me that a lot folks on this forum spend way too much time worrying about what other people are doing/wearing/etc…
The worst part about that t-shirt is that it’s a blatant rip-off of another unfunny shirt and doesn’t even make sense as a result.
Cheerleaders have had the “if cheerlieading were easy, they’d call it football” shirt for years, and, though it’s not very funny, it at least makes sense because of the relationship between the two.
It’s just a way for that man to express himself and he chose a t-shirt. You chose a tattoo to express something about yourself in that same manner. It could be entirely different ofcourse but it’s still an expression. I think it’s kind of funny that he wore a shirt that states that because it may spark some discussion between people that may see it and get them thinking of some sport other than a stick and ball sport that may actually be difficult to train for and race in.
I for one like when people aren’t lemmings and wear something (clothing, tattoo, piercing) that may express their opinions on life whether simplistic or deep, controversial or not. What’s the fun in seeing people that dress in khakis and polo shirts-holy shit how boring can one be ;-).
i’m not flaming you BTW and I do understand your point but it’s OK for people to express themselves-whether you it agree with it or not. Remember we have wonderful freedoms in our country that we take for granted each day (I’m speaking for myself here) even if it is a statement on a t-shirt

As a runner I learned the quote as, “If running were easy it would be your Mom.”
“If triathlon were easy, it would be called football.”
Givent he average size and temperment of triathles and the average size and temperment of football players, that shirt should just as easily read, “I bet you can’t knock me out with one punch to the forehead?”. Joking, most football players are used to small guys taking pot shots, and just ignore them rather than waste the energy.
IMO, people that would wear that shirt, probably exhibit a lot of “Napoleanish” behaviors.
“My sport is your sport’s punishment”
That’s a good one … and most likely true. I saw my old college baseball coach about amonth ago and told him what I was up to. I had to run a lot in college for missing classes. I joked that he wasn’t punishing me, he was urging me to a new sport. Thanks.
I would like to have that t-shirt. Most people that have had to run for punishment will completely agree.
T0shirts all depend on the wearer. A l’il guy in a tough tee doesn’t work. A big guy in a “silly” or “romantic” tee is hilarious. A have a buddy that is rather muscular and he wears a “Bob Ross: Happy trees” t-shirt and it’s pretty funny. I like the t-shirt with the squirrel and the pile of peanuts with “Protect your nuts” at the bottom.
