Triathlon Scene Raleigh NC

I just accepted a 1 year co-op with a company located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. It begins June 1 this year. I’ll be moving from Columbus, Ohio, and sadly it looks like I may miss all of the area triathlons I signed up for here this summer, including the HFP Mohican Half I was really looking forward to. What’s the triathlons scene like in Raleigh/Durham and the surrounding area? And must do races? Any suggestions on areas to ride or good clubs in the area? Best open water swimming locations? All input welcome!

Tue/Th at Inside Out Sports Cary location they have a hard 30ish mile bike ride 6pm. Top triathletes in the area will throw down, Tuesday usually is the faster of the days, but both will go as fast/hard as you want to go.

ETA: I lead a ride on Wed night at IOS Raleigh location 6pm, 30ish miles as well, more climbing than the Tu/Th IOS cary rides.

Depending on where you live you either have Jordan Lake (cary, west/south side of Raleigh) or Falls Lake in N. Raleigh (IE 540 and North).

Must do races in Triangle area over summer…not really any. Check NC Setup Events, FS Series or Jones Racing for some area races.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I will definitely have to join some group rides. Not sure where I’m going to live yet, I’m making a trip the first week of April to see some apartments and check out the area.

Welcome to Raleigh! There is a ton of races within 2 hours of Raleigh from Jones Racing Company http://jonesracingcompany.com/, FS Series http://www.fsseries.com/...n=page&page_id=1, and Setup Events http://www.setupevents.com/. Inside Out Sports http://www.insideoutsports.com/ is the triathlon hub here in Raleigh. There is a ton of races, lots of running races, and plenty to do. There were so many run races scheduled here last year the city had to put a limit on it. You won’t be bored here.

I moved to raleigh from Columbus (born and raised) 4 years ago. I think you’ll find that the triathlon scene, and active population in general, is much larger down here.
Alum creek cant hold a candle to Jordan lake and falls lake for open water swimming. Umstead park for running.
Pm me if you have more questions.

Brooks, I didn’t know you ran the Wednesday night rides. I might try to join you guys later this spring. I have to get back in shape…before I get in shape.

I’m taking the ride over from Brian, I always ride the Friday lunch rides (will lead them now), definitely come out.

Are Tri bikes welcome on the group rides?

On the Cary iOS rides they are cool with them, even riding in pace line. However any ride that I lead I ask/demand you sit up while in pace line. If you insist either hammer off front or lay off the back in aero.

Good to know, thx.

Welcome. You’ll love the Raleigh-Durham area. We moved here going on two years ago and it’s felt like home from day one. Research Triangle Park gives you lots of options as far as where to live. Most of the responses have pointed you toward Raleigh and the Cary area. When you’re down here take a look to the west both at Durham which is a city with a distinct small town feel and even beyond to the west. We live in Hillsborough and the commute to RTP is about 30 minutes in the morning. The traffic coming from the direction of Raleigh–and home at night–can be a back breaker. Lots and lots of great rides out this way as well as the availability of pools and runs. Please take a look at our club website, www.midcarolinamultisport.com, as well as our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/midcarolinamultisport. Our group events tend to be a little less killer than some you might find but the club offers a great opportunity to interact with a super-friendly group of people and to connect with members who’ve done everything from super sprints to ironman distance races. As mentioned elsewhere, there are probably no “must do” races, per se, but within the membership of our organization, I could probably point you toward a good handful from sprint through full-iron distance that are big favorites. Give me a shout at info@midcarolinamultisport.com and I’ll be happy to answer any questions or point you to someone who can better answer them. Ed
