Triathlon Mockery Podcast W/Joe Skipper

His retirement is official and it’s this year post-Kona. I heard it from Georgia Taylor-Brown on Miles from Ordinary podcast (strong recommend) and one other source I can’t remember. From Nick’s list, Lange has said that Roth 2027 would be his last race. The other candidates are solid at least for a soft retirement.

Very good narration. He’s the new guy on The Triathlon Hour as well.

Yeah sad indeed but I guess it was time. He is one of the great personalities in the sport and I’m sure he will still be around in some form or another.

I look forward to seeing which adventure Tri or crazy challenges he does now.

I wonder if this will be Joe’s low of the week, or if “retirement” will be this week’s Bullshit Buster.

Definitely one of the most entertaining pros in the sport, that’s for sure. The Triathlon Mockery coverage of the Sub-7 project was perfect.

Goodbye Joe! Thanks for the memories.

I can’t really agree that you didn’t wait for the sport to tell you it’s time to go. That’s sort of exactly what you did…

What do you mean? A DNF at Ironman Austria followed by a second place at the local triathlon is the going out at the top of your game.

I actually always rooted for the guy, but you’re right he definitely didn’t pull any punches when it came to punditry so he shouldn’t expect any pulled in return.

I do look forward to hearing him commentate. He’s got a scrappy triathletes way of looking at things that allows him to just talk about the race, the athletes on the screen etc without getting lost of beautiful loping strides and turnover and other fluff.

The sport told him it was time to go pretty loudly.

Seems a bit harsh. He did get 2nd at IM New Zealand last year & 2nd at IM South Africa this year. Both were very strong performances with 4hr 10min bikes and 2hr 40min marathons. Would have loved to see him take on IM Wales again in September as the defending male pro (has not had a Men’s pro race since 2022).

Yeah but there were like 8 guys racing IMSA this year, Joe got demolished by Matt Marquardt who was racing on 2 hours of sleep a night, and the only name I’ve heard of that finished behind Joe was draftus maximus Tristan Olij.

So…

its true the last few years have not been that great, but he was a pretty good athlete at his peak, and I appreciate that he gave up a good bit of money too be able to make fun of some tri products.
He was different and I liked that.

Didn’t see this thread about, bumped an old thread thinking it wasn’t being discussed.

Im gutted, one of the best personalities in the sport, he’ll be missed.

Was talking out of my ass here a bit (Florian Angert is not a noname, and neither is Andrew H-T; Andy Dreitz has a beautiful past).

Still, weak fields in IMNZ 2025 and IMSA 2026, early days of the season both in 2025 and 2026… altogether 3 DNFs in 7 races in 2025, trying desperately to tackle another full, and another, always an excuse, always one more shot instead of backing his training process… Joe failed and that’s why he quit and that is harsh but fair IMO. He’s not retiring on a high or even a mid.

Did Joe do an interview with Beaugrand as well or are you thinking of the Tom Oosterdijk one?

Enjoyed his YT a lot. Joe and Techno and his penchant for high end sports cars  Real character for sure. Can’t say I didn’t see his retirement coming but maybe not as immediate.

ups… I think you are right tom gets the credit .

Anyway Joe is an excellent interviewer. His issue is consistency, for sure. Remember the interview series he was supposed to host on The Triathlon Hour? Taylor Knibb, Fred Funk, India Lee… all great conversations, and that was it, he went AWOL. He was such an excellent co-host of Triathlon Mockery with Tom Oosterdijk, ditched that as well (to Tom’s very public surprise, LOL). Ditched that for his own podcast, which once again fizzled out. Seems like the only media project that really worked for him was the sub-7, and then he was a last minute call-up, so too late and too short a prep for Joe to get bored with the process, and no obligation to do it again

Well OK, there’s the youtube, that has been pretty consistent.
