Triathlon bike shoes...best?

I have Shimano TR-01 carbon sole triathlon biking shoe. They are very lite and comfortable for about 1 hour of riding. However, on my longer rides 40-60+ miles, I feel like the base my feet have been beatin with a baseball bat and some real hot spots occur. I do olympic and 1/2 ironman distance, so my feet hurt bad the first mile or so, on my longer races. What is the best shoe I can buy, with a big plus in comfort and fast in T1/T2 and while riding. PS I do have a wide foot, but not so wide where I need special sizing. But some brands of running shoes are too narrow. I currently use Asics 10.5 regular.

I’d say either LUST or Rocket7. Both will net you a custom made shoe designed around a mould of your foot. LUST is about twice the price of Rocket7, for reasons which are unclear to me. While Bunny say’s they’re better, I don’t have any idea what makes them better.

Frankly, I doubt you could go wrong with either.

I had the exact same problem with my TR-01’s, but the addition of aftermarket insoles made them very, very, very comfortable. They were completely different shoes with the new insoles.

I used the Peterson Powerbed insoles, but I once used the Superfeet insoles from my running shoes instead… both worked fine.

You might be able to save yourself some pain and $ by trying new insoles instead of new shoes.

Cheers,

that’s a good suggestion. my pearl tri-road shoes aren’t as comfortable as Id like. my mountain shoes with spd’s are more comfortable and no I dn’t EVER use them on my tri bike

but on my road bike they are comfortable. I’ll have to tri the insoles in the pearls.

one variable is the fit - the pearls are a little big on me. I think tighter shoes work better.

The TR-01 shoes are great shoes and unless you go custom you probably can’t go “better” you may find a shoe that fits your personal foot “better” but that’s about it. On that note the TR-01s had a couple of flaws in the upper in my opinion but nothing that would cause hotspots, the new TR-02s seem to address all the shortcomings of the older shoe.

Your best bet, as reccomended to others is adding some aftermarket insoles. Try Superfeet Grey insoles, harder to find then the typical Green and Blue running varieties but teh grey are lower profile and work great in tight fitting cycling shoes. I won’t ride without them.

I am having the EXACT same experience. Got a pair of the Shimanos this summer as my Carnacs, which fit absolutely perfect, had worn out and the new Carnacs I tried fit very different. The Shimanos are give me bad hot spots after about 3+ hours which is not good as am getting ready for IMFL. Have been experimenting with duct taping some felt padding around the area where the hot spots occur which has helped some but not cured the problem. Love to hear any suggestions others have to deal with this problem.

don’t know if they’re the best, but I have the Nike Tri Shoes and love 'em
.

I have last year’s Sidi Lazer’s – very comfy. Though I don’t do a lot of 3+ hour rides these days. For me, the big thing is the structure of the tongue. Most have huge ridges at the edge of the opening and the tongue goes on the outside. But the Sidi’s have a tongue that is (a) padded and (b) with a smooth opening. At least it’s something to look at.
