I have a friend who is looking for a triathlon bike. He is doing an ironman in a year. He wants to buy new, but at $1000-$1200, I’m not sure what he can get.
Any suggestions?

Your friend might be better off with a road bike with clip ons. He might find more things in his range. With that said, I saw a 2006 Fuji Aloha not too long ago new at Performance. It was last year’s model and they were letting it go for $850.
EDIT: Go to http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/nemesis06_SPECIALpre.htm
This is the same frame and specs as the Aloha, but with different paint. The negative is that your friend will have to pay for someone to assemble it if they can’t.
The Motobecane/Fuji are likely the best deal on a new bike at this price point, but is your friend absolutely closed to the idea of going second hand.
You can pick up a really nice used Cervelo P2K on ebay for about a grand. Other good used tri bikes can also be had at this price.
Does he need pedals/shoes/helmet/computer/flat kit/etc? That is sort of the forgotten new bike tax…l
Cervelo Dual with Ultegra group gets them pretty close ($1500), but otherwise that’s a tough price point to reach.
Nytro.com has the 2006 Felt S32 for $1189 and the 2007 model for $1348
.
Look around for a used Cervelo Dual, and he will have a top notch bike
.
In that price range it would be best to look around on the used market. A new bike for that kind of money is going to be a real energy hog, not something you want to feed before running 26.2 miles. Tim
I second the Dual, Used or new is a good bike for what you pay.
Dual is a great bike and should be able to find one used around that price.
But shoes, pedals, etc. will push him well over 1k
Everyone brings up a good point. I didn’t think about all of the other stuff that comes with triathlons. Your friend will probably have to go with either a used bike (not a bad choice) or a road bike (not a bad choice either).
What about the Felt T43 Bikesport Michigan has them for $800

I got my local bike shop to order last years model of the Felt S32 from ythe manufacturer and it came in right at $1000.00. Ultegra components mixed with 105’s and even comes with SPD pedals. I have really enjoyed this ride! check it out at www.feltracing.com.
Wow, just cruising around bikesport how’s this for 2006 S32 – $660. Looks like they have 58 and 60
