Triathlon Bike for $1,000?

I’m asking for a friend. Is it possible to buy a new triathlon bike for about $1,000?

For a grand you won’t get much new. For that amount you should be able to find something like an early model used Cervelo P2K which is still an excellent ride. Check ebay.

depends what you want to call a triathlon bike.

bikesdirect.com has a few models that come with aero clip ons and some of them have vaugely triathlon style geometry (http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/windsor/rwt_tri.htm)

but you might be better served with a $500 trek/specialized and a set of clip ons.

Or a used Cervelo P3 aluminum and have one of the quickest bikes out there instead =)

You can get a 2008 Jamis Comet for $1,200. Ask your local Jamis dealer. If I recall correctly, Slowman had a couple of nice things to say about its geometry.

This is what I did. Bought a P2K on ebay for $780.

New tri bike for $1000 you won’t do better than this:

http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/nemesis06_SPECIALpre.htm

The Motobecane Nemesis. Its basically the same frame as the Fuji Aloha, but comes a couple hundred dollars cheaper and with WAY better components. All ultegra and dura ace. Wheelset isn’t too shabby either.

and 76 degree seattube angle

not completely retarded

For a thousand bucks he can pick up quite a nice used rig.

Another option is to buy the parts from e-bay and build it yourself. Using mostly used and/or nice closout parts and assuming your friend already has pedals and wheels you could come in well under $1k perhaps even with Ultegra level components.

What year? I just bought a blue P2K 2003/4?
It is a great bike…took it out today for a spin, still a bit too cold out here though!

$800 CAD

Just looked at your blog. Same frame. I bought it last year, it was my first bike since I had a BMX bike in High School and college.

I’ve enjoyed it so far, but I don’t really have anything to compare it too. One season of Tri’s and I’ll be doing some sprints, an olympic and a 70.3 on it this year.

I’m in the process of giving it a make-over. I’m taking all the components off of it and using them to build a road bike & putting new “toys” (all components except wheels; tear) on my Cervelo.

Sounds like fun…have fun with the builds!

That was second hand. Right?
I can’t convince my friend to buy second hand.

Never heard of this company or bike. How does one verify that (a) the company is good. (b) the bike is ok.

its pretty hard to screw up a bike frame these days, so they are all going to be “ok”

for a tri bike you are looking for a steep seat tube angle, and aero tubes. none of the new $1000 options are going to have aero tubes. so forget that.

other than that, look at the components on them. shimano tiagra/sora < 105 < ultregra < dura ace

the motobecane linked in this thread is probably the best new bike you could get for $1000

I would go used though, as you can get an absolutely STELLAR bike for $1000 used

instead of a barely ok one new =)

That is second hand and to clarify Cervelo P2K 2003 Aluminum fame/carbon forks/ Ultegra components/ritchie wheelset.

Check for closeouts if they won’t go used. We picked up a brand new 2007 Felt S32 around this time last year for under $900. Saw some comparably-equipped Fuji Alohas for even less than that (this was at Hudson Trail Outfitters which I think was getting out of the tri bike business entirely, so YMMV)

+1

The P2K is a great ride.

For what its worth, Motobecane has been around for a long time and is reputable, if not exactly high end.

That looks like a pretty good deal for that bike. But I, like many people here, would go used for $1,000. Lots of old style Specialized Transitions on Ebay for less than $1,000.

yep, friend of mine has one of those, has had it for a long time, still going strong

I get beat to the top of every sizable hill on all of our local group rides by one particular Motobecane so I know how they look from behind.
