LOL!

I think most everyone has at least tried the stuff. I’m one of the few who haven’t. My opinion has gone from “must be bad” to “I really don’t know”. Either way, it’s still not for me.

that’s classic Tom.

puff puff give.

Well, you didn’t think that my Aerodrink was actually full of drinking water, did you?

You know those of us born & raised in BC will own that challenge

The poll asked what his race ban should be, not if he should be charged and fined appropriately for an infraction. I said no race ban, because I hardly think weed is a performance enhancing device. If the local PD wants to give him a ticket for possession or use or whatever, go for it; that’s the chance he took when he sparked up.

Don’t know if USA Swimming has any kind of ‘morality clause’ in its by-laws though.

That makes at least 2 of us. Though I still don’t think Phelps should receive any ban.

we should never wish that THE man come down on A man for breaking an unjust law.

breaking unjust laws is a proud tradition of free men!

most of us do it. downloading an MP3 here, speeding a little there, not reporting our ebay sales as income over there. stealing a few cervelos…wait…ive gone to far haven’t i

I’m pretty sure that it’d be hard to make a charge of possession stick based on a photograph. I can’t imagine the most overzealous canadian cop even dreaming of trying such a stunt - I know laws are different in the US but I doubt they’re that messed up.

Yeah, they do have a "morality"clause. There is a clause that allows disciplinary action if someone engages in activities that could bring USA Swimming into disrepute. They suspended him pursuant to that clause.

What a terrible clause, you could argue anything might bring USA Swimming into disrepute.

I mean, they hand out condoms to olympic athletes so they can all fuck each other and the locals more safely but you can’t smoke a plant?

amazing!

I do love this planet we live on, it is SO STRANGE!

=)

I recently read that the origin of the work “FUCK” is from medieval times… Fornication Under Consent of the King.

Any disagreement or alternative explanation?

Most sporting commissions seem to have similar clauses. I’m almost certain that Aus Swimming used the same clause to ban Nick D’arcy from competing in Beijing. He had been charged with assault following an alleged punch to someones face.

For the record, I view punching someone as being in a totally different league of seriousness to merely smoking a bong.

Pfffft - where do you think your (good) weed comes from?

Hey, Tommy Dee!

I cannot speak for most or many triathletes…but having raced among them for 30 years and served them in NW retail for 23 years:

I Can Say:
1 As a D1 Swimmer…we used No real Drugs or alcohol…but 1-3 nites a week, we replaced the student choice of university beer with a bong, and instead of 3-6 beers per 'brothah…we had 1-2 inhalations, were socially enhanced, yet 'chill, and felt 110% awesome the next day.

2 Triathletes are low on the 'Bong Scale…while having outliers like me and my secret "Supa-Friends…“Re:.Memo: Beginning @ 4:15 pm Tuesday,Raceweek in Penticton Late August 2009…under the trees next to the SS Sicamous ('aka; ‘The beached Steamer’) the friendly tribe will meet 'to chill 'Mon…:)”

3 Certainly not to pick TOO harshly on the ST collective, but…as a sub-species within a group (IE: ST within Tri) 'TWITCHERS are a straight up tight crowd…it is, what it is…I do not paint that as a negative.

4th and final for now…the same mindset that compels some to add metrics and documentation(SRM/PT, Garmin…blah) to even the MOST basic workouts, is the same hard-wiring that has weed as the outlier drug to 'DaTwitch.

Not unique is my preferred approach (the swimmer’s way, IMO), Total RPE…no HRM, No SRM, 305/705 or PT…uh, no cyclometer…you see the picture I am painting here.
My N=1 conclusion…24 of my 28 IM finishes between 9:35 and 10:06…always racing, never pacing, not knowing or trusting the result of the day until the final 1K…that clock is a glorious site.

cough!

As long as we do not get pissing drunk, then drive like dangerous F-Heads, then I am cool with what ever one chooses for stress/social and recreation enhancement.

“Cough!”

Tom, For me it falls under the category of “STOP holding athletes up as moral superiors” by codifying penalties for NON-PERFORMANCE ENHANCING, OFF-THE-FIELD-OF-PLAY activities. He’s a human being. He smoked pot. Pot is illegal. He should face whatever criminal repercussions might come of that. But in NO WAY should the act or ingestion of that particular substance affect his ability to compete in sport. It is not performance enhancing…and may even be performance degrading (smoke/lungs?) If he is charged and convicted of a crime, AND there are provisions in the USOC or swimming body(s) codes which provide for sporting penalty for criminal convictions…then perhaps he should face those. I just don’t see it as a “doping” offense in the same light as, say, EPO, steroids, HGH, etc…

His penalty should be the loss of personal revenue from loss of sponsorships, etc. since most of them will be taking a hard look at whether they want to be associated with such an example. If they can continue to support the guy based solely on his athletic prowess…then let them.

Let the public dole out the moral repercussions. Let the sport deal with the sport.

Frankly, the three month “suspension” smacks of “we think we have to do something but we don’t want to kill one of our cash cows”. Follow the $.
