Triathlete Mag: Mail Call "Fernanda Flap"

Btw…I’m going to move this thread to the LR…as the discussion is going that way
.

I’ve been living in the UDS for 9+ years and I still don’t get it! Some people get all hung up with a triathlete wearing a swimsuit modeling for a magazine in which its target are athletes wearing revealing clothes most of the time. Still, for the sme people it is ok for their kids to watch news, movies, TV shows, idolize and imitate idiotic stars and let’s not forget that most of those kids have access to the internet in which they can pretty much have access to anything they want!

shhhh…you going to get us deported
.

I know what the studies say. I’ll direct you my continuum point, as it applies to both subjects.

Problem as I see it is this:

TMNT is among the first steps along the violence continuum. A child may progress along it through graphic video games, network TV, feature films, etc. Maybe someday that child ruthlessly murders a dozen or so of his classmates. Rare, but it happens. Most children though are typically able to maintain a clear delineation between reality and fantasy in this regard.

Spare me the typing though, and follow the same line of reasoning in the area of objectification and degredation of women…

When you’re done…porn is exactly where you’ll end up, if you’re lucky. As it can surely result in much worse.

I hear parents say this crap all the time…“you don’t have to worry about the images…the sexualized chatter, the innuendos…it goes right over your kids heads.” Well maybe it goes over their kids heads…mine appear taller. I can’t seem to get anything by them. Where does everyone think kids learn this stuff, anyway?

So…the only way to avoid your continuum hypothesis (is your real name Georg Cantor? :stuck_out_tongue: - sorry…nerdy joke) is what? cover women from head to toe, and keep them locked inside? Pushing your reasoning to the extreme, this is what you get…
Or maybe you should start giving your kids more credit…

Folks…

I haven’t a problem with the pix being on the inside, and the same holds true for the Swimsuit Issue. Thing is, when I’m on the streetcar on the way to work, it looks like I’m browsing Maxim. In a business suit. Just seems really juvenile, the marketing is, somehow, off.

Easy solution: Tore off the cover, problem solved.

Fernanda Keller is, obviously, an amazing athlete who should be praised, but the question is, what are we praising her for by putting her on the cover of a magazine mostly-nude. Triathlete is in the business of selling magazines, and you know what, if sex sells, and a few people buy the magazine for porn, but then get into the sport, the net net is actually a good thing.

And believe me, I’m no devout Christian or right-winger. I just wonder what Triathlete is doing to their target market. I’m remembering what happened to Muscle Media a few years back. They sex-and-product-ed themselves into an irrelevent oblivion. I hope that Triathlete finds the right balance, and considering the inside articles, I’m not yet worried about it. Just something to be watched and commented upon, so that the magazine knows that we’re both style and substance…

Just my $0.02

As I said in my OP…I try to keep a check on this with my kids, within reason.

The answer lies somewhere between burkas and nude beaches, me thinks.

My point is, as objectification/degredation of women goes, it’s a never ending battle. The images are everywhere, as others have pointed out in this thread. As a parent who is relatively hot on this issue, I have to constantly be aware of what my kids are exposed to. It would be nice if there was something…sometime…where I could let my guard down a little. Couldn’t a triathlon magazine at least give me that?

Are there more rapes in France than in the US?
http://sa.rochester.edu/masa/stats.php

funny though…german women, french women etc…they are ok showing their boobs on TV…

In pakistan, women are covered from head to toe…yet, there are a lot of rapes…and for a rape to be a rape, you need to have 4 male witnesses…good luck. you see no images of naked women on TV

Wouldn’t you consider for one second that it’s the lack of free will, and allowing you to make up your mind, based on a sound education, as to what is sexually healthy, vs. what isn’t? and that repression only leads to problems?

Trymedad, you’re exactly right. There is a large, obvious, and important difference between celebrating the athletic form, and sexually objectifying women. I have not seen these latest photos of Ferndanda, so I don’t know which category they’d fall under. But the fact that she’s an athlete, or a good athlete, or that some people think her bod is “hot for a 45 year old,” or “hot, period,” does not preclude them from falling under the objectifying category. I love how we’re supposed to believe that athletes have some kind of immunity from being sexually objectified. How exactly does that work?

As for all this whining about prudes that goes on every time someone has a problem with reducing an accomplished woman to jerk-off material, people need to wake up. Have you people looked around at the sexualization of our children? Been to middle school lately and seen what our daughters are wearing?

We could do this all day long…

Again, it’s not a US vs. Europe thing. And rape is a crime of violence, I’ll remind you.

As to your last point, I am not advocating censorship. Just common sense. There are places that I can go to see all of the boobies that my little heart desires. Just keep them there. Over here, where my children are, use some discretion. When they reach an age where they decide that they want to seek out boobies to gawk, so be it. As a parent I’ll do my best to point out the downside to this behavior, but repression is certainly not the answer.

This all too often is reduced to all or nothing. Freedom of speech vs. censorship. Somewhere we’ve lost the ability to, as you say, make up our minds based on a sound education, etc. Sex is already everywhere. How’s that workin’ out?

I’m not really coming down on one side or the other over this…Did he really say “cause our sport to lose integrity”? That’s what I find funny…It’s just freaking Triathlon for goodness sakes! What integrity?

I might add that I’d like to hear exactly what “damage” he’s referring to. I’ll spin it a little differently than some of the other posts…It’s 11:49 a.m. EST…A lot of East Coast middle schools and high schools have already finished lunch-time…I wonder how many teen girls are now in the restroom puking up the little bit they did eat, to stay thin, the way you “must” look according to most media???

There are lots of ways to spin this…

“Somewhere we’ve lost the ability to, as you say, make up our minds based on a sound education, etc. Sex is already everywhere. How’s that workin’ out?”

but what is the answer then…

As you say those things do not slip over your kids head. We cannot shield our kids from these things…Pretending they don’t exist compounds the issue…our kids see these things and have thoughts about them…if we do not shape those thoughts then they are left to shape their own…

I have 4 young kids that also see these things…My kids see my Triathlete Magazines…I get Rolling Stone and it has some racey covers but when they see those things I talk about that person. She is a great triathlete…She is a new singer…I think Francois is right when it comes to the most important part is not that they see it but the example your kids see from you…I think lack of guidance has more to do with today’s issues than violence and nudity…

No doubt about it. I am the greatest influence on my kids when it comes to this subject. Most of my f’d up views towards women come from my father, not the fact that we had HBO.

Unfortunately I’m not the only influence. Their peers are and always will be a major influence.

I’m sorry, but alot - and I mean ALOT - of parents I come in contact with are complete dopes. Sheep. They see nothing wrong with what their kids are exposed to…just the cost of doing parenting business these days. My question is, does it have to be?

Does it have to go back to Cleaver-time? No. But when do we say enough, already? What’s it gonna take for the only people who can affect change - we consumers - to alter our choices. It’s easy stuff. Cancel your cable and magazine subscriptions. Let the poor customer service rep on the other end of the line know why, politely. Stop watching that network crap. We’ll survive without it.

Will this eliminate every affront to women. Of course not. But you wanted an answer…it’s all I got.

People who write letters like that to magazines make us Americans look like a bunch of stupid prudes. It’s embarrassing, but sometimes we get a reminder that our country was founded by Puritans whether we like to acknowledge it or not.

Ummm…yeah…that’s the problem. Pilgrims. You’ve got it all figured out.

LOL.

“These mags will continue to sell to people who enjoy objectification and have no criticism of capital’s use of sensuality. Others are going to cancel their subscription because it does not represent their sport, sends a negative message about women in sport (men are generally shown in active/powerful positions and not the same poses as women) and does not help them with their game. In general, I am not sure why a publication would want to exclude people from their potential market by using images that create such a stir (no, this is not about freedom of expression or a singular celebration of form). I guess it is all about the bump in sales for that one issue, and nothing else.”

Ummmm. Okay. I don’t think this issue was about objectification. I think if Triathlete was really into making a statement that they are totally into hot chicks, they would have put that model from Planet of the Apes on the cover in a bikini instead of in a form-concealing cycling jersey. I - a young woman in nowhere near as amazing physical condition as Fernanda Keller - looked at those photos and thought “Holy shit, get to the gym.” I guess if putting a woman in a bikini on a bike in a national publication encourages me to get my ass in shape … well, that’s a nicer form of objectification than Alyssa Milano half-naked on the cover of Maxim (which, btw, I also have no issue with).

Fernanda should be on more covers, more ads, show up at every race I do in that suit, etc…

maybe we’re just tired of sex being peddled to us 27/7.

And the same can be said about religion, lest we forget the sideshow freaks more commonly referred to as t.v. evangelists. Every summer back in Ocean City, my home up until recently, the campus crusade kids would infest the island in an effort to “save” everyones soul, and believe me they weren’t subtle about it. As for objectifying women, I guess there was a guy with a gun aimed at Fernanda just out of frame. Shame she was forced against her will to pose for that cover shot.

I think you need a beer.

We have a winner !

WTF??? Dude…you’re just out of your mind…
The horrible Euros, naked on the beach…oh my god!!! The poor kids having to tolerate this :stuck_out_tongue:

I never hear anyone calling CNN, NBC, etc to tell them to stop showing images of people dying for real (murders, twin towers, war images, etc…)…
Real violence is fine on US TV, but you say fuck, or shit, and it’s beeped.
Real violence is fine, but heck, don’t go showing a tit or a butt because this will be rated as porn…

Absolutely.

I’ve been fortunate enough to travel the world , relatively extensively. In a nutshell , I just can’t figure this ( hopefully small percentage ) of conservative , people.

In European and Asian beaches ( Thailand , Bali in particular ) topless is pretty much accepted and rightly so. You don’t see the surrounding public mentally distraught because of it.

I lived in Argentina in 80-82 bordering Foz do Iguacu ( Brasil ) and therefore frequented Brasil and travelled to the beaches on the coast frequently. Brazilian women cover their genitalia and nipples , yet reveal nothing …in “skimpy” bikini’s.

By all means in the Triathlete magazine that I started this thread about , Fernanda is weraing the equivelant of a one-piece swim suit , based upon the “norm” in Brasil.

How about those narrow minded individuals considering the fact of how she feels AND the fact that although Triathlte Mag. is produced and based in California , it is exported globally , because our sport is global , AS IS THIS FORUM !

I am really trying to
