eeeep, i hope he’s ok
.
Can you give us some details?
Unfortunately, not too many. Several emergency vehicles were at the scene when I passed. I believe the athlete collapsed after the first major hill (longview, I think). He was motionless, except for his chest which was expanding as a result of CPR.
Later in the race, an emergency vehicle passed by again. I can only assume it was this gentleman and they were on the way to the hospital.
from a local tri club member - the gentleman did not make it - suffered a heart attack and passed.
thoughts to his family and friends and to those athletes that were on the scene to assist
I raced Mountaineer and passed by as well. It was right after a short steep climb, perhaps 10 or 12 miles into the ride. Emergency vehicles had yet to arrive, but a few other athletes stopped and were giving him CPR as I passed. It was a very scary thing to see. After I finished the race, my wife told me that he did not make it. Apparently a heart attack.
I’ve thought about it a lot over the last day. Very tragic. This was a young guy, maybe my age. Not to sound like I’m making light of it, but I can only hope that he was doing what he loved to do, with his friends and the people he loved nearby.
44-year-old male called a boat over during the swim, made it on to the jet ski and collapsed. Apparently, he was receiving CPR for 20-25 minutes, before an ambulance showed up. The reservoir is 25 miles from the nearest medical care on Forest Service roads and an ambulance was NOT on site. He was eventually Life-Flighted to the nearest hospital.
The guy is in critical condition.
Let’s hope he makes it.
The athlete name is Tom Zehmisch.A regular customer of mine. Was just in the store on Friday to get his bike tune up and race ready. He just did the bay to bay swim a few weeks ago.Tom got a virus from the swim lost 15 lbs.Said he was okay and was going to use the half as a work out. My prayers go out to his family.

Similar at Pacific Crest. Big guy was swimming and having problems. The kayaker was talking to him, he said he was ok. The kayaker stayed with him. He finally grabbed a bouy. The kayaker went directly to him, he was unconcious. They got him to shore and started CPR and was then life flighted to a hospital. Still haven’t heard how it turned out.
No race should happen without the proper emergence folks on site.
If I knew an RD did not have this, I would not do the race.
