I’ve been shipped across from the UK for a couple of weeks’ work in Houston; I’m off to Austin for some of the weekend, but was wondering if y’all (see, I’m learning…) could recommend some fun tri stuff for me to get up to? Any god tri shops in Houston / Austin where I can blow my strong pound on more crap I don’t need? Any classic runs or lake swims I could try? My rental car is my oyster…
I don’t think there are any local races until June 13. Check out the runners world web site, they have a traveler’s section on Houston with lots of good run info.

Thanks Guys!
May 22 in Boerne (by San Antonio) is a small beginner tri:
For a great running spot in Austin, go to Zilker (spelling?) park. It is in the center of town and has a running path that circles Town Lake. It is a beautiful town, and a beautiful area. I’m not sure where to cycle, but throughout downtown might be too congested with traffic. Stay on the west side of I-35 if your doing anything in the downtown area. It can get ugly pretty quick if you end up east of the Interstate.
Texas has great road systems, with access roads all along their Interstates. You can cycle on these access roads across the state if you want to do the distance.
If you need any more info for Austin, let me know. Obviously, you should check out 6th Street at night if you like live bands. It is a great time!
While you’re in Houston you can try Memorial Park for some trail runs. It’s very popular for mtn biking so it’s got lots of singletrack but there’s a lot of runners that use it too so people are used to it. Just watch out for the blind corners.
From 610 take Memorial east towards downtown. You’ll go under an overpass for the railroad tracks and hit a light. Take a right. There’ll be some softball fields on the right side. Park and just take any one of the trails that go away from the parking lot towards what would be behind the softball fields.
Try early morning or evening… I’m sure you’ve noticed it’s a little warm and muggy…
