I have purchased a couple ab workout videos that boast “core workouts”, but they’re for regular people and not tailored to the specific needs ot the triathlete. Any recomendations for a killer core workout DVD that is meant spacificily for the traithlete would be appreciated. One that you can pop into the DVD player and work out right along with the DVD would be great. Like everyone else that has to work for a living finding time to train is our biggest obsticle.

Put PowerCranks on your bike then pretty much any DVD will do to provide a “tri-specific” core workout.
that almost gave me a laugh…until I realized it was frank that posted it…
Tri-specific core workout?
- You are being a little picky. How about you just do a lot of variety.
I just read Complete Conditioning for Swimming. It had a bunch of good core stuff. But that’s only for swimmers - not triathletes.
Maybe I am being pickey. Maybe you have lots of time on your hands. I don’t. Two workouts a day plus a full time job and a family.
Every sport including triathlon targets spacific muscle groups. A core workout for a runner is great for a runner, but he doesn’t ride 112 miles bent over in an aero position before he runs. Same with bikers, very core spacific workouts, but again after his bike ride he’s not going to run a marathon.
Who knows maybe there is no such thing. I just thought with all the busy triathletes someone could recomend a good DVD that we could get maximum use of given the tight schedules most of us live.

I like the Runner Core DVD.
I just disagree that core strength is that specific to each sport. Do 15 minutes of core, different exercises each time at the conclusion of your first workout of the day. If you are doing them correctly, running works your core, biking works your core, and the same for swimming. That is the most specific - do that first if you are so crunched for time (and stop posting - yes, I’m guilty too)
I like the core workouts that come with p90x: Core synergistic, Ab ripper, yoga, stretch, etc. Otherwise, check out the book I mentioned above. DVD’s are nice to start with, but once you know the moves, create your own thing. There are many great exercises which require little more than a balance ball and a stretch cord in that book. You can deflate the ball and pack that with the cord when you travel.
I liked the core performance-endurance book.
At one point I had this:
I wasn’t impressed and ended up giving it away. It’s isn’t something you put in and follow along, it was just video of a bunch of different exercises. It came with a training plan, but once you watched the demonstrations, the DVD didn’t really have any further value. It may have changed, it was 4-5 years ago that I had it.

I would recommend having a look at Functional Strength Training for MultiSport Athletes as a large % of it focuses on core.
So let me pose this question.
All that running and riding, do you think that may be specific enough?
If core muscles were so important to triathlon don’t you think all our abs would look like our quads?
Just a thought, flame on.
I purchased a core workout book a couple of years ago called core performance. Sets out a whole program. Have had good results with it.

You forgot swimming, think of all the good ab work you get doing fly and flip turns.
Go here http://triathlontrainingseries.com/ - in addition to being a DVD it’s a DVD ROM so you can print out different phases of strength routines for different phases or your season. There are some great core exercises in here in addition to other strength exercises specific to triathlon.
