Tri Shorts and Swimming Pools

In anticipation of my first triathlon, I have purchased a few tri-specific items, including tri-shorts. From running marathons, I know that you do not want to try out another for the first time on race day so I would like to swim in the new tri-shorts. However, the only place I can do this is a fairly well chlorinated neighborhood swimming pool. The shorts don’t say one way or another if the chlorine will destroy them. I don’t plan on making it a habit, but would one 3000 - 4000 meter swim do much harm to them?

I swim in mine all the time for masters. Never seen a problem yet.

I’ll second that. They seem to hold up just fine for a little while.

I would not swim in them every day. They will get saggy quick.

Good luck

Tri shorts and speedo styles will eventually break down in the chlorine (we have all seen the guy who is wearing transparent, saggy swim trunks), but you can prolong the life of them. You shouldn’t wear them in the shower after your swim as the heat will hasten their demise. You should also not wring them out with too much force, air drying is better (out of direct sunlight). You can also get some of that mild detergent at your swim shop, but woolite probably is just as good. With all that in mind, they should last awhile, but not forever!

Da Bum

3 weeks ago, I had only 1 pair of tri shorts and I used them twice a week to swim and usually once a week to bike.

Friendly wheel sucker: “Hey stevie, looks like you had corn for dinner”

I am now the proud owner of 2 new pairs of tri shorts and 2 new swim suits. The DeSoto ones I just finished off lasted about a year and a couple of months. Great value.

Thanks for the advice. I was probably only going to wear them once in the pool as I have a swimsuit for regular use.

Zoot or TYR go for it, they’ll die a slow death but hang around a while

Desoto watch out, my experience is that they disentegrate pretty quickly
.

I’ve been swimming in my DeSoto tri-shorts for the past 4 months and they are holding up just fine.

I had to do some sewing on them last week, due to a road-rash - but that’s another story…

I swim 5 times a week. They last me about 8-10 months. I have a pair just for swim training - I also get in a hot shower with them after the swim and the pool has a spin dryer to put swim pants in which I also use - like I said - to me this is good value and I don’t mind replacing them as I get good “mileage” out of them!

<<You should also not wring them out with too much force, air drying is better (out of direct sunlight)>>

And also, don’t use the suit spinners(dryers) either.
