Tri Shoe or Road Shoe

I have poor bio mechanics in one of my feet and ankle. I like the speed in which I can get in and out of transition with the single closure of a tri shoe, but the stability and fit of a road shoe cant be beat. Does any one know a great fitting road shoe with a wide toe box that can easily be slipped in and out of in transition.

I used a pair of Sidi Zephyr-Mega’s last year (http://www.sidisport.com/eng/scheda.php?macro=1&id=15) and really like them for tri’s. The mega size has a slightly wider toe box which I need. Once I properly adjust the lower two straps, they never need to be touched again and I only need to tighten the upper strap after slipping them on.

If your feet are closer to normal width, the Sidi Spark could also be an option (only has two straps but does not come in the mega width).

Any 3 strap without buckles.

Bonts are pretty easy to get out of.

Strap setups such as the Specialized trivent and the new PI Octane really strap your foot down hard.

Any 3 strap without buckles.

i’ll second the no buckle recommendation. just bought tri shoes for that reason. i already had good road shoes and didn’t want to buy more, but they have a ratcheting buckle. i used them last summer for tris and it’s really a pain in the ass to get them buckled on the bike.

Specialized BOA. No straps to deal with.

I have similar feelings about tri and road shoes; I love the speed of the tri shoe, but I feel that the instability results in lost power that produces a slower split at the end of the day. Individual fit governs of course, but I’ve found the Specialized S-Works road shoe with the BOA system to be a great alternative to tri shoes. They tend to have a wide toe box, and the BOA system can easily be tightened while rolling.

X2 on the Specialized Boa system. The S-Works are really pricey but the Comp road shoe is a good option. It also comes in a wide width.

Very tempted to go from Sidi Mega (great shoes but the buckle is a hassle) to Specialized BOA as per CoachMikeWhite. I prefer road shoes as any small gain in time with the quicker straps of a tri shoe is lost over the course of the race when you look at the comfort & support of a road shoe. IMO.

+1 on the Specialized Boa shoes. I ride the Comp road shoe and it’s a nice stiff sole, good fit and not restrictive around the toe-box (I really notice this as I run in VFFs so my toes like to spread).
Also a fast shoe to put on and should you need to, is easy to adjust on the move.

How bout a great tri shoe with amazing support?

Try d2 shoes.

Yes they are expensive but they are the best purchase I have made in cycling period!

Yes… I have been eyeballing the Specialized BOA shoes. Have never used that technology but it looks to be a good solution. Has anyone had any issues with durability in the steel cabling system or is it solid?

I use three strap shoes, even one has a buckle. I can adjust the bottom two so I dont have to mess with them. I bet the difference between speed of me donning my shoes and my tri shoes is less than 5 seconds. I am sure I gain that on the course. You can even ratchet them down further or adjust the lower straps if you want while riding. I don’t even own tri shoes anymore. I guess it might make a difference if I were racing sprints, or possibly winning, but I will never win a race but I am not slow either. Also, I race longer stuff. I am totally willing to give up 5 seconds of my transition to ride 112 miles in nice shoes.

Just my thoughts, others will surely disagree.

I have the Specialized s-works road shoes, I love them but I have problems tightening on the fly… after the swim i cant get a good grip on the BOA dials easily and feel i spend a lot of time trying to get both dials right while on the bike (I leave my shoes clipped in as it should)… I have been thinking of getting a pair of tri-shoes for this reason, but have been reading a lot of threads and I am not convinced I will find a pair that i like as much as the s-works that will give me the same performance…
