The Mcdonalds kids triathlon is an annual kids triathlon in chicago`fraid it was on the 27th of august though so you missed it this year. heres the link: http://www.reebokwomenstriathlon.com/04c/tri_more.htm

They’re in the Chicago area and have a kids tri-club as well. Their kids do pretty well; one of their girls beat my daughter at the national championships last year 
and several of the others got on the podium in various age groups. They seem pretty hard-core, though, and that may not be what he has in mind for his grandson. Regardless, I think they would be a good resource for the information he’s seeking.
