Just got my commision bonus and I’m finally going to get a set of race wheels…I’m going with a pair of HED 3’s. Here is my problem, I’m doing Lake Placid and don’t want to look like a total kook going 18mph with a set of race wheels on, you know what I mean, I don’t want to be “the guy” with all the nice stuff, but is crawling around the course like a dead mule. I know, I know, just go faster and I won’t look “the guy” but that is my pace for that distance. What should I do?
"What should I do? "
Don’t worry what others think. If you want the wheels then get them. Also, they will make you faster.
Ride your nice new wheels. Who cares what anybody thinks of your “qualifications” for using good gear.
If you ride 18 mph, two things will be true:
-
You will be in the top 1/3 of the field
-
You will gain a benefit from using high quality aero wheels
I’ll be riding an inexpensive(relatively speaking) road bike with new Tilium SS’, and hope to ride about 18 mph, so you won’t be alone.
Roll on, brother! See you in nine weeks!(did a chill just run down your spine?)
(did a chill just run down your spine?)
…it did mine! I better get my rear in gear!
Be safe training…
I know, where has the time gone? It seems like yesterday was January and we had plenty of time to get ready, and now here we are and it’s right around the corner and before we know it, we’ll be all depressed that it’s over. See ya, happy training!!

Like everyone else I say ride 'em! Your money… your wheels… just that simple. Who cares what anyone else thinks. By the way I’d be real happy with 18+ mph ride, especially on that bike course.
jmorrissey,
Nine weeks!!!.. WOW! where does the time go? Back out the taper and there really isn’t that much time left is there? Perhaps I will run at lunch today!
I ride a KM40, Dura-Ace, HED3 & HED Alps.
I joke that I look like Lance Armstrong and ride like Neil Armstrong. Hank at the LBS just smiles.

Neil Armstrong was actually much, much faster, having achieved 4,000+ mph as an X-15 test pilot and reaching ~24,000 mph on the (alleged) return to Earth in Apollo 11.
