Any harm in riding my tri bike on a local Century ride?
My tri bike is much newer/nicer than my road bike-- plus I would like to have more saddle time on my tri bike.
Just curious-- anybody else ride tri instead of road for Century rides?

Just rode mine last week for RAMROD. 154 miles 9K + climbing. Go for it!
If you’re doing it solo it’s no problem at all.
If you’re doing it with a roadie group it’s not your best choice. You shouldn’t ride on the aerobars when with a group as it’s too dangerous. In fact, they’ll probably be very quick to let you know about it. If you ride the tri bike with the group sitting up off the aero bars it could be a long uncomfortable ride.
Agreed. For the safety of the others around you, go with the road bike. Even if its and organized ride (i.e. MS 150) go with the road bike. If you are just going out yourself, or doing a brevet or something of that sort…then a tri bike would be ok.

I’m a dedicated roadie and I ride lots off centuries. There are plenty of folks riding tri-bikes on centuries these days.
Here’s the rule … and it’s an absolutely hard and fast rule. You can’t be down in the aerobars in a paceline unless you’re on the very front. In a paceline, you’re riding too close together to be that far away from your brakes.
If you don’t have much experience riding in a paceline, you absolutely shouldn’t ride your tri bike on a century unless you’re planning to ride it solo – not drafting or riding with anyone in a group.

I ride mine all the time, but I am with a group of 15-20 that I know very well and only use them on the front or, I might drop off the back a little bit and ride them there.
Ride the bike you are most comfortable riding for that distance. Personally, I believe I’ve ridden my tri bike for every century done in the past 7-8 years, and couldn’t even think about being on the drops of a road bike for that long any longer. Way easier to get cozy on the aerobars, and just grind it out
With that said, definitely take note of others’ comments. Do NOT get in those aerobars in a paceline (or in the middle of pack) unless you are on the front. I’ve seen some ugly crashes by folks not being able to control their bikes (or they accidentally creep up and overlap wheels - then can’t maneuver if they person in front has to move).
