According to the IM Tremblant facebook page already up to 13.6C. I swear they must have poured boiling water of the ice that barely melted a week ago (pink font). Maybe we will get lucky and it will be a no wetsuit swim by August or even Sep (unlikely for Sep). I’ve done several no wetsuit swims there in July and if the race was mid July good chance of no wetsuit, but it is not in July…by Aug nights are longer and lake temps cool a bit. 5150 you should need neoprene caps, by 70.3 water temps SHOULD be pretty good.
How big/ deep is this lake?
Here in upstate NY, I’ve never had the opportunity to be forced out of my wetsuit (there was that one time when the water temp was in the gray area). I have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that a few degrees north latitude should yield warmer water temps. That being said, I’d absolutely love it if they too away our wetties for a race or two. I need all the advantage I can get.
I’m fervently hoping that your “unlikely for Sep” part is accurate.
Thanks for the update. I’m doing the 5150 next weekend. I raced in 14-15C water last weekend and it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. I really hope they allow a warm-up for safety reasons as much as performance…

At the Canadian Long Course Championships in Lac Magog (just north of the border in Quebec) it was no wetsuit in July 2012 and that is a fairly large lake. I’ve trained several times in LP no wetsuit as I have in Tremblant, but only in July. IMLP has been no wetsuit (July 2011). It really depends on the year. In any case in Tremblant the only chance of no wetsuit is realistically in July. Other than that, you’re in wetsuit legal racing although I keep hoping that the August 140.6 will be no wetsuit. I am sure they will go 30 m underwater to find a colder spot to make it wetsuit legal though (by the way, the reason I want no wetsuit is because they really bothers an injured neck. I swim just as fast without one on these days).
Cody, for the 5150 you should be able to warm up. I am assuming it is a wave start in which case there is a big warmup area off on the right. We had the opportunity last year at both the 70.3 and the 140.6.
Yeah Dev, I think they’ve got that particular thermometer either sitting on the aluminum hull of the boat, or in the first inch of someone’s cooling cup of Tim’s… (trying not to be cynical, trying, trying…)

Last year they cancelled the 5150 swim at Tremblant.
This year the ice melted about 2 weeks later than last year and it has not been warm. I wonder how this is going to play out
I don’t remember a warm up 2 years ago.

Thanks. A cancelled swim would be a bummer.
I’m not sure if 5150 races fall under Ironman’s SwimSmart Initiative. According to that policy, it’s business as usual above 52F/11.1C. That’s cold!
The air temp in Tremblant has been above 20, and looks to be for the next few weeks. I bet the water will be fine. Even if it only got up to 16, that would be fine with a wetsuit. Can’t wait to get there!!
180ft at least …its a big lake.
Could you flick that little switch on the left to “F”?
Take the # in C x 2 + 30 = F within a degree. 13.6C=56.5F. So 13.6 x 2 = 27.2 + 30 = 57.2 so off by <1 degree, simple math to get close
Last year they cancelled the 5150 swim because the temperature was below 13deg.
It was at 14, but winds cooled it down a few days before the race.

Looks like everything should be good to go for the 5150 this weekend…this is what I saw on the Tremblant facebook page today:
.
Yep up to 16.6 today
.
so times 2 plus thirty = 118 F we knows our maffs down here in da states
.
Hmmm, that picture’s a photoshop job. Exact same photo as the earlier one but with 16C photoshopped in. Trustworthy?
I am racing in the 5150 event tomorrow and the water is about 66. It is very comfortable with wetsuit and I even jumped in no wetsuit. The weather is beautiful!

I know, but it is coming from their facebook page. As Lauren said, the weather in this part of Canada is pretty good right now. Keep in mind that day are longer and longer so more sunlight for water temps to come up too.
Don’t worry, I don’t really mistrust them. Just thought it was weird they’d photoshop it like that.
