Trek warranty policy - crash

In a nasty crash this morning I cracked the down tube (almost all the way through) on my 2002 Trek 5500. The LBS (not where I bought it) said he did not think Trek would cover it unless it was a structural failure. Anyone else familiar with Trek’s policy on frames. As I was sliding across the highway, and before I hit the mail box pole all I could think about was whether or not I would be able to complete my long run on Sunday. When I hit the pole, I knew my answer.

What do you guys think about at that special moment?

Thanks - I wanted a new Tri bike anyway

I would agree with your LBS, why would any mfg cover something that was not a defect caused by them?

Dave

Well, remember, a warranty is meant to cover defects, i.e., some shortcoming or mistake in the manufacture of the product.

An accident is something that happens to the product that had nothing to do with its manufacture.

Based on what you’ve described here, this is not a warranty: There was nothing wrong with the bike. unfortunately you just had an accident.

Now, Trek may have a crash-replacement program for replacing a broken/damaged frame at a reduced cost as a courtesy to customers.

Thanks. That is what I figured, maybe I will come up and see you next time I’m in town on business. (sooner rather than later, now that i am without a bike)

Trek do have a crash replacement policy, but only if the bike is a couple of years old. My wife cracked her 2001 5200 in a crash 2 years ago and she could not get one under the policy. Maybe it is different in USA.
