I have an Aegis T2 and obviously won’t be able to count on any kind of warranty support any time soon. I am on my second frame due to a warranty issue, so I am naturally a little concerned about having to go through that again.
I’m looking at maybe a TTX or Litespeed Saber to replace the Aegis. I’ve not been fitted on either, so who knows which one will be the better bike for me. That said, I am not interested in buying a bike from another company that may not be around very long to deal with warranty issues and repairs. I like the idea of a Ti frame for durability purposes. However, I have heard that ABG had some layoffs recently and wonder what that says about that company’s future…
So, when picking a new bike, how much does the size and/or stability of the company play a role in your decision making process? Despite the fact that Cervelo’s and Trek’s are everywhere at the races, maybe becoming a Trek/Cervelo lemming is not such a bad idea given their stability? Thoughts?..
Really? No idea if you are serious or not, but I am just not digging the idea of shelling out the $$ for a frame or bike and then not getting warranty support down then line if needed. How many people did Trek lay off?
Be aware that the Saber has a REALLLLLLLLY tall head tube. If you have a few spacers on your Aegis, you’ll be fine. But if you’re looking to get super low…you’ll find it difficult without using a super-negative rise or adjustable stem. For instance, the 53cm Saber has a 13cm head tube! A roughly equivalent Cervelo, Felt, Kuota or other will be in the neighborhood of 9-10cm depending on which size you choose. You’ll find more detailed fit information in the stack/reach tables to determine if it is appropriate.
I have both of those bikes, and no worries. Trek for sure is going nowhere. First ride outside on the TTX yesterday, and all I can say is WOW! That said, I loved my Saber, as I have had it for years. Get the one that speaks to you when you ride it, and have no fears.
I have a Saber and I’ve ridden a TTX. Both are great bikes, but they have a different feel and you should ride each before you decide. Both fit short torso people well, particularly if getting low is not your gig.
For the Saber, the titanium frame is bulletproof and it wouldn’t matter to me about the warranty service. I have a carbon road bike and I have to be SOOO much more careful with that one.
I am not sure that I follow you. What do you mean by “point fingers?”
I’m just trying to decide between several bikes and found the stability of the company entering the calculation for the first time. It largely has to do with recent news about Aegis shutting down.
No offense taken. I read your comment as if you have some inside info on either of these two companies or perhaps Aegis? Any chance the ST connections can get the real story out on that?
IIRC, you moved from a Blade to carbon bike? Any regrets or opinions on ride differences? I’ve never ridden a Ti frame and am looking for as much info as possible. Thanks.
I really liked my Blade very much and replaced it because I thought it was important to try different bikes. I had been on a Ti TT bike forever and had only briefly ridden a carbon Lucero.
That being said I think you’ll be very happy with either the Litespeed Saber or the Trek TTX as long as the fit is good.
I understand your hesitation given your experience with the T2. If you have a warranty issue, you want the company to be around to service it. However you also want to choose a bike that is unlikely to have a Warranty issue. IMO, the T2 is not such a bike. My apologies, but I think it was rushed to market and is a poorly executed frame.
Given my uneducated opinion, I would expect that both Trek and Litespeed will be around for some time and would be available to handle warranty issues. Even if ABG were to go under, I would still feel comfortable buying one of their bikes. Very durable in my experience.
What say you Slowtwitch… do you think the feds would consider Trek “too big to fail”???
