Hello everyone…I purchased a Trek TTX frameset (2009 9.9) via Ebay. It was a warranty replacement and advertised as brand new, never built. It arrived today and appeared to be everything claimed, still wrapped in factory bubble tape etc…However, upon closer examination I noticed the right chainstay, close to the bottom bracket there was an indentation like someone had squeezed the chainstay and dented it. There is a metal plate over this indentation. The metal plate also is dented. I examined my other bikes to see if they too had this feature. one does (2005 trek 1500) and one does not (07 madone sl). It looks like this might be an indentation to allow more clearance for the inner chainring. The paint around the area is perfect. Can any mechanics or TTX owners let me know if this is part of the design or damage to the frame. I only have like 2 more days to lodge a complaint with paypal if it is damage. Thanks for your help.
I think by design, i do not have the bike any more but my metal late there (tear drop shape) fell down and it looked like dented.
I’d call Trek right away, but I think that’s a piece to keep it from chipping the paint if the chain gets dropped.
I have found several photos online and it appears to be design feature for inner chainring clearance. just extra ansy due to it being online purchase. would still love confirmation from any TTX owners or trek mechanics who can give a definitive answer.
if it looks like this, it’s by design:

My TTX is the same. The frame is indented and the metal piece is shaped to fit. I know the frame is indented because the metal piece popped off one day, and I had to put it back on. At that point, I noticed the frame indentation. Enjoy the new bike! I love my TTX!
Thats it. Thanks for the reply and posting the pic.
do not worry it is by design. Mine is the same.
That’s by design. DEFINITELY.
Mine had that plate. And it fell off the second or third time I ever rode it… and everything still works fine.
its by design…
It’s by design.
