Trek tri bikes: why no love

How come I see very little liking for bikes such as the Trek Equinox on the forum? Besides fit, what should I be concerned over with the Trek?

I must see 100 cervelo posts for every one trek tribike post…

Teege

Cervelo is what all the cool kids get for Christmas.

More seriously, though, people definately have had success on Trek. Gordo Byrn rides a Trek Team Time Trial.

Trek seems to have become the Microsoft of bikes. Ubiquitous, but definitely not loved. I’m on a Trek now, which I bought used, and it has served me just fine. Perfectly good bike. But if I could, I’d wave my wand and turn it into a Roo, Cervelo, etc.

No soul.

I really like the Trek TT/Equinox. If I was to get a new bike that would be a frontrunner. Tim Deboom won Kona on a trek and some guy from Texas won a bunch of races in France on a trek.

Not only that but I think some in the bike business are becoming disenchanted with some of their business practices as well.

Slack seat angle is one reason…

Very slack. That is one of the big reasons. The Trek frames are built to fit Lance. So if you happen to be of similar proportions to Lance, then great, it might work well for you. But the frame is Lance’s UCI TT frame, NOT a tri-oriented frame. I think that trying to squeeze somebody of totally different dimensions onto a frame with limited sizing runs that has a very slack seattube is not a recipe for success in triathlon. Especially on this forum, where the FIST school of thought is quite dominant.

Because:

It’s kind of like people when the go out to eat. Some people when they go out for Italian think Olive Garden. Others will shun Olive Garden as big corporate and only go to Luigi’s little bistro.

I have been racing a an equinox/tt this season. Though not being a triathlete(I race road and mtb), I am very impressed with the construction and quality of it. I have noticed how the carbon frame has helped speed my recovery after super-big training days/races…

I know that the angles are very slack is comparison to tri-geometry. Maybe this is why not to many are seen in the triathlon world.

FWIW

are you sure the equinox frames are the same dimensions as the TT frame?

It’s hard to tell on Trek’s crappy web site.

any company that makes info that hard to get can forget my business. have you seen that one big giant pdf file for all their frames?

forget it.

besides who wants the same bike every other wannabe bandwagon jumper buys.

my first bike was a peugeut. my second a bianchi. my fourth a cervelo.

ok my third was a lemond but no one knows it’s a trek right:-)

I like having a bike that makes my neighbor go “hmmm. he’s serious
WTF is a cervelo?”

LOL.

Go Giant TT

So I guess cervelo is out now too…

What would those biz practices be?

Treks are like Cevy, they’ll get the job done and get you from point A to point B. But they are not as sexy as a Porsche (Cervelo).

“besides who wants the same bike every other wannabe bandwagon jumper buys.”

Now there’s some sound logic for rejecting a perfectly fine product. I’ve been riding Trek frames since before Lance was riding them. Though I’ve owned a number of other bikes as well, today I still ride a Trek 5500 OCLV. It’s one of the finest frames on the planet … bar none. If you don’t agree, you probably don’t have any direct experience for comparison. And though I also own other bikes, including a Cervelo Soloist, they certainly aren’t any better. Different, but not better. And I’ve never even had a hint of a problem with Trek’s customer support. Over the years, I’ve had a few problems. They’ve bent over backwards to keep me riding and keep me loyal to Trek.

Now I own a Trek Equinox ? (can’t remember the number). It’s not a high-end bike. It’s the top aluminum model this year. It’s not the hottest thing going, but it was the best value I found for the money. I’ve been riding it for about six months now and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

"my first bike was a peugeut. my second a bianchi. my fourth a cervelo. ok my third was a lemond but no one knows it’s a trek right:-) "

So the important thing to you is the name/label on the bike, right? That’s impressive.

"I like having a bike that makes my neighbor go ‘hmmm. he’s serious
WTF is a cervelo?’ "

I like having a bike that helps me perform at my best and doesn’t break the bank doing it. I like having a bike that’s supported by the dealers in my area. I like having a bike that’s backed by a company that takes customer support seriously. I like Trek. They meet all those important criteria.

“LOL.”

Did you write something funny?

Bob C.

IMO, for the same $$$ Cervelo specs a nicer bike. Period. Then there is the whole bandwagon thing. Here in WI, I would bet that more than half the bikes on the road are treks.

Well I know of one case that Trek was asking for quite alot from an LBS. Significant floor space, not to bring in other vendors, wanted to see a list of customers, taxes, as well as increasing minimum orders.

On top of that they financed and stocked a near “Trek only” store in the same area, less than 10 miles away, built the building and placed an “X” Trek employee as the “owner/operator”.

In essence my understanding is they are or have been adopting the “Trek and nothing else” policy. In areas that they can’t find a “Sell Trek only” store they set one up in direct competition with the current dealers.

Most of this has come from a second hand source so take it FWIW.

Cervelos are dime a dozen here.

When I buy my TT bike I’m going to ride a bunch of bikes around to decide which one I like the best. I’m not going to buy on brand name.
