Talk to me about Treasure Island Triathlon. How does the deep water start they talk about on the website work? Is the swim choppy? Scenic race? Worth doing?

You hop off a ramp into the water, tread until the horn and go.
Is the swim choppy?<<
Not too bad, since it’s near a cove. Cold though (60 or less).
Scenic race?<<
You swim in view of the Bay Bridge, and have views of SF on the bike and run.
Worth doing?<<
It’s a fun end of year race. The bike though is more crit-like since it’s totally flat and multi-looped. They again can’t take the Oly course up the big hill and onto Yerba Buena Island due to road construction and that helped spread things out. The sprint is a total crit. Run is also totally flat and can have wind in parts. Weather can be cold (or not). Last year was cold standing around working transition. If you get all hyped up about racing with newbies who may or may not know the rules or have the best bike handling skills…this is NOT the race to do.

I’m personally not a fan of all the loops on the bike, but its pretty fast and seemed well run to me. I’ve done some early morning training swims in that cove and it can be really beautiful out there in the morning with the sun coming up over the East Bay.
I think the water has been near 55 the last 2 years. The cold water and sometimes cool air are the only elements to deal with . The water is fairly calm, the course is 100% flat.
Spend some time in a business park racing around corner and accelerating out of turns etc… And on race day watch for potholes and other bumps on the bike!
I did it in '03 and thought the entire race was kind of crazy. Jumping into the bay in November is an intense experience (I think I liked it, maybe not)! I did NOT enjoy the newbies all over the road on the bike course but I remember the run being scenic but still crowded, a lady basically “ran” me off the road. I won’t be signing up for this race again but it was an experience.
Any other late season Oly or sprint races I should consider for California?
I don’t know too much about CA, I live in OR. I’m doing a nice race in late September near Mt Rainier in Washington State called Black Diamond. That’s pretty far from CA though.
Tim:
I have heard that Catalina is a great, fun race & then you hang at the Margarita bar after. That’s my plan.
