Its me again, just wanted to know treads on tri tires, what do you guys use to ride out with?
MTB = yes, cross bike = yes, tri bike = no. Others may on road bikes, especially for winter rigs
Alex can you be more clear I’m not getting the info
.
The only tires I run on the road are 700c x 23mm tires that have no tread, well noting more than tiny undulations that wear off within 100 miles.
I know some people who ride through the winter on the road use 700c x 25-28mm tires that have a little tread, maybe 2-3mm deep that is there just to help cut through water.
Me, I take the hard packed trail in the winter which I use a CX bike with 700c x 30-35mm tires with tread.
When the seather is real bad I ride my MTB with tractor tires ![]()
Treads on car tires meant for road use are there to channel water to prevent hydroplaning, not for grip (for grip it’s best to have the most rubber contacting the road). This is why tires on Indy cars are bald…and that they suspend the race if the track is wet.
For road bikes the contact patches are so small compared to the wider/bike weight that water removal/hydroplaning is not an issue. That’s why most performance 700x25c and smaller tires are treadless (or nearly so).
As far as tires, here’s what lots of folks here use (assuming you roll clinchers):
Winter Training/Commuting/Bad roads: Conti Gatorskins or Specialized Armadillos (roll slow, but nearly flatproof).
Trainer/Racer: Michelin PR3 or Conti 4000S (great mix of weight, cornering, wear, fast rolling, and flat protection).
Race only: Conti Supersonics, Zipp Tangente, Bontrager Aero Race X-lite (all of these with latex tubes).
Titan hits nail on head.
No need for tread on road tires. Any that have them are for marketing purposes only.
I posted from sheldon brown on the road tire tread is not needed…boy did I get flamed, people said they could tell with handling traction…So you may get flamed (no I do not believe it)
