Preliminary thoughts about getting a treadmill for the house. My question is how much do you have to spend to get a decent one?
My criteria would be:
-reliable/durable;
-a decent max speed (maybe 6 min/miles?)
-ability to put at an incline
-somewhat cushion-y.
Not looking for bells and whistles. Don’t need preset courses, heart rate, calories burned or anything like that.
Are you looking new or used? Around where I am you can go to equipment stores that liquidate the machines from gyms that either upgrade or go out of business. Those machines are pretty good and can be had for a lot less than new (less than 2k for a 5k treadmill). Not too sure your pricepoint but for a commercial machine you are looking anywhere from 2k to ???. Costco would be your best bet if you are looking for a home model, don’t know too much about them.
Yes, you could go Costco and get one for $800 that has ‘similar’ specs, and a lot of people do and it works fine, but if you do get a ‘dud’ or one that needs some servicing or upkeep, even one service call will make that bargain not make as much sense. With a Sole F80 ($1500ish), you get a known brand with a dedicated company with solid customer service behind it. These are used by serious hardcore runners the world around, and tried and tested.
Picked up my wife a Proform a handful of years ago from Sears (I think) for roughly $600-700. It’s held up well over the years with no signs of wear yet, and she uses it frequently enough I don’t complain about buying it.
I actually ran 10 miles on it today as I was home watching the little ones while she’s out galavanting around Vegas running the Rock-n-Roll half.
I bought a precor that was a trade in from a gym for $550. new is around $5000.
The Precor distributor that supplies gyms is near me outside Chicago. If your anywhere near Chicago, PM me and I’ll get you a phone number for them. The treadmill is a beast and it took 4 of us to get it in the house, even then… It was a struggle!
When you narrow down your search maybe check out the reviews on ‘treadmill doctor’. I think they have ratings for all of the major brands and their info is pretty comprehensive.
I have no complaints about my livestrong 12.9 and it meet or criteria wo breaking the bank. Not everyone can go ou nd buy a 10k wood way because they want to run inside for the winter

Used commercial is definitely a good way to go. I have a Life Fitness that I got for $800. Only issue I ever had was that it weighs almost 400lbs, so it goes down stairways pretty quickly if you don’t have a good grip on it.
