Treadmill Racing (1)

So I am at the gym today running on the TM wearing my IM shirt listining to my iPod. I am cruising easily at 9 min mile pace just hanging loose, practcing technique. This really fit nice looking looking woman mounts the TM next to me and instantly looks at me, then sets her pace at 8.3 on speed scale. I am tempted to go but I hold back, for all of 5 minutes. Then, after watching her rip it, I cant hold back anymore, so I up it to 8.5 and she looks at me. We hold this pace for 5 mintues then she amps it up to 8.6, I match. She ges to 9, I match, then 9.5. I match. Wow, she is fast! We hold here and smile at each other. We run here for 5 minutes, then I decide enough and back to plan for my easy aerobic run. Then she slows down and finishes, I keep going. I asked her if she ran track in HS, YUP! She didnt stick around long enough for me get her number!

Treadmill races can be a lot of fun! Sure broke up an an easy aerobic run, AND, it actually felt great to rip some speed!

Anyone esle have a fun treadmill story?

Couple of tricks to really get into their head.

  1. Keep your incline to zero, and throw a towel over that. (Be sure to reset THE WHOLE information before you get into a treadmill “Feed The Warrior” race; in that way she or he can’t calculate you were running 10 minute miles before this started!)

  2. When you get up to 8-9 mph, check your cell phone, like someone is texting you, and type something real quick if you can, and lay it down. Do that 4-5 times, every four or five minutes. You can even program it to call yourself. (This isn’t safe, but this usually demoralizes your competition)

  3. Here’s one. When you get up to 9-10 mph, start watching the TV and start gesticulating and shaking your head like you are actually following some issue on it, although in point of fact you are in great distress.

  4. Run up and down the belt during your session. This is an art. When you come back up to the top of the controls, and front of the belt: increase your MPH by .2 Drop back and keep doing that. In this way, much like a horse changing its lead: you are 1) constantly passing her, many times and 2) giving her nausea.

  5. Hand weights. Have them ready to go. A good 2 pound hand weights session will get you some points.
