Traveling with bikes

Has anyone found a reasonable deal on traveling with their bike? Although the cost of airline tickets and races seem to have stabilized, the airlines and shipping companies have lost their minds when it comes to getting the bike from point A to point B. For the prices they are quoting me, my bike should be sitting (fully assembled) in first class while I travel coach.
Specifically, I am flying American Airlines to St. Croix from the US and need to get a couple of bikes there. I don’t mind being without the bike for a couple of weeks if it means we don’t have to spend a grand to send our bikes.

This brings me to an answer to a previous post about whether the economy is forcing a change in race plans. We are a 2-triathlete family, and we’ve been forced to flip a coin to see who gets to race when we are traveling to races. We can afford the race fee and the flight/hotel, but paying more to send the bike than just about the whole trip combined is cramping our style. I have forfeited races that I’ve paid for b/c I can’t afford to get the bike there.

We have used TriBikeTransport for domestic races to which they are going, but need help with international and smaller domestic races.
Thanks!

For domestic, it seems the discount airlines are way cheaper with bikes. USA3000 and Southwest are both just $50 each way. Much cheaper than the big names.
