Traveling to europe for an IM

Doing Roth this year but have some logistical questions. We’ll have 2 bike boxes. Is it relatively easy to get a vehicle large enough to carry the boxes…is shipping easier?

When we did Switzerland last year we rented a VW Golf Plus which easily took both of our bike boxes and luggage. No issues with getting something bigger if you need. We rented using www.kemwel.com and they were by far the cheapest.

Good luck with your race.

We rented a seebring convertible. It was REALLY tight, but we managed two trico cases in the back.
Yes, the top did fit back down again.

Yeah, it is really tough!

All those stupid Europeans only drive golf-cart sized cars and very likely the shipping companies don’t have trucks to get your bike from the big american plane to your hotel.

Honestly, with your concerns and all…

you better shouldn’t be going!

Are you for real?

It’s not a problem. Just step back and do some research. How many in your party, are they all travelling with bikes, how close to Roth is your chosen airport? If it’s close get a taxi at the airport that has station wagons or vans, if it’s too far for a cab hire a mini van.

At IM Germany two of us travelled and took a cab that had a VW transporter and booked him for the return trip then. IM Austria. Two of us took a cab each which were hatchbacks, bikes went in ok. Alpe d’huez tri saw three of us and three bikes so we rented a Grand Espace, Euro Cross champs two of us flew into Schipol and got both bike boxes in a Peugeot 206 SW!

You are probably best off travelling with your bike on the flight, most people do so outside of Europe and it’s very rare for it not to arrive with you. I have travelled with my bike on dozens of flights in the last 15 years (in fact only once without) and it’s never gone missing. Just get a strong box if you are flying in or out of Frankfurt, they have a bad rep for damaging boxes.

thanks. We have 2 triall3 cases which are larger than the trico’s and we need a car for about4 days to get in some traveling befor the race. We’ll most likely have to do a van of some sort.Unfortunately we do fly in and out of frankfurt

I would go for a Grand Espace/Mercedes Vito size van. Also, they are hot on checking the bike box weights there so I suggest you carry the bare minimum in your bike boxes.

Enjoy your race and travels, it’s a great area and good hearty eating.
