I was flipping through the bike porn uhhhhhhh - I mean Excel Sports Boulder catalogue when I noticed this. It seems perfect for someone who travels a lot and needs to get quality training in.
Anyone ever tried it? Seen it? Heard things about it?
The idea of buying a folding bike for travelling has appealed to me for a while. I tend to fly with my bike at least once a year and would take it more frequently if it was easier to transport.
Some other bikes I was looking at was the Airnimal (http://www.airnimal.com/) and the bike friday (www.bikefriday.com). I saw 3 Bike Fridays in the TA at Ironman France last year - don’t know how they performed though.
I remember several years back when Bike Friday was reviewed in Bicycling magazine - it got a very favourable review. A nifty bonus is that the suitcase it comes packed in can be converted to a trailer, so you can ride around and tow the shipping case if need be. My only problem with them is that I just can’t get past the “circus bear” feeling. It’s the same as when I rode my brother-in-law’s foldable Moulton. Nice bike, but I was waiting for the clowns and lion tamer to come by any second.
What I like about the Ritchey is that it’s a full-sized bike that happens to break down into an airline-sized suitcase. If the connexion is as solid as they say, it sounds like a pretty good rig.
used mine at Ironman Malaysia …bike split 5:20
tied for2nd fastest biek split in age group
no bike fees by airlines!!!
compact, easy to pack and assemble, supplied with plenty of padding.
i have owned Slingshot, Titanflex, Airnimal Chamelian and now the BreakaAway.
so far this packs easiest.
BreakAway (ti and carbon) is the best one so far.
Airnimal is great but tires wear out fast. slightly heavy but with x light componets able to make it 18 lbs. need bigger chainrings to get gearing (58/44). IM Coeur d’Alene 5:54. only 1 week of trainning on this bike
TitanFlex is great also except cables are hard to change (internal cable routing) more involved withbreaking down for travel. IM Florida 5:35:11
Slingshot great but slightly heavy. very easy to fold and travel. IM Florida 5:19:31
