Travel help needed for the Tour de Lance

I’ve booked a package but I need to buy air tix. It seems to be cheaper to go thru London. Is there a oversized luggage charge on the chunnel?

Any advice would be appreciated. I’m traveling with a friend from 7/13-7/29.

Do either of you know where to get exact route locations? I want to take a train to Besancon and see the ITT, but have know idea what the route is. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Keith, although I disagree with title of this thread, I will be in France from Jul 14 to Jul 27 to watch the Tour de France and do some other riding in the big Alpine mountain passes like Galibiere and Izouard. I plan to be in Bourg 'Oisan for the ITT up to Alpe d’Huez. If any slowtwitcher are there, we should plan our own ITT up Alpe d’Huez, perhaps the day after the pros leave. I’ll be writing a short article about a “triguy’s attack on Alpe d’Huez” for Slowtwitch.com and how pathetic/slow a competitive tri age grouper (myself) is compared to the top bike pros in the world. It would be cool to have a number of us go up, perhaps 1 min apart and chronicle the outcome.

By the way, I’m flying from Ottawa Canada, via Toronto, direct to Zurich. Seems to be the easiest connections for me and gets me right close to some nice riding in the Swiss and French Alpes. If I get back to Zurich by July 24th on my way home, I’ll also catch the action at Ironman Suisse.

They don’t release them until the last minute. Then, daily L’Equipe newspaper will have every town along the route along with a timetable of when the caravan, the leaders, the peloton and the stragglers will come through. Last year that was always off since the race pace was so fast.

Francois, are you sure about this? I called them a couple of days ago and they said that bikes are being charged excessive baggage fees. Last year Air France had a promotion where they did not charge for bikes during the Tour, but when I asked about this the lady on the other line said that they will not have anything similar this year.

I have called all the major airlines and the cheapest one is Continental, whose bike charge is $80 one-way (worst was British Airways: $420 one-way).

Unless of course the rules are different when you get to the counter.

Francois,

You’re the man! Thanks for researching that. Gettin’ ready for IM France I presume. Keep everyone up on how your training and taper are going.
