I would definitely suggest paying for a few sessions with a PT. Tell them up front that you are paying out of your pocket and are looking for direction / exercises, not 3x visits weekly. Also ask if they do “ART”, which I think stands for Active Release Tension / Technology (?)…can’t remember what the “T” is. It is a newer massage technique where they stress the tendon and surronding area to try and stimulate the healing process. I am heading to therapy tomorrow and will confirm the “T.”
re: the “natural running” shoes - I have significantly changed my stride. MUCH shorter / faster cadence (which suits me as a cyclist). I land much more flat footed than previously. From what I understand, most natural running shoes recommend leaning forward and having your feet land under your shoulder, not in front of you. I found that, for me, it worked better if I leaned BACK a bit. This kept my Achilles from being stretched during my stride. It almost felt like I was throwing my feet out in front of me, but still landing close to under my weight. Again, that is what worked for me. I have no idea if it you’ll have similar results, so tread carefully.
Funny you mentioned motion control shoes…I am beginning to think that is what caused my problem. Was sized, analyzed and fitted to a motion control shoe at the local running store. The Achilles flared up very quickly after using those shoes. Nothing to back up my feelings here, just gut reaction.
I am slowly seeing improvements…ran 2.75 miles today after riding 18 (too cold to ride any more than that). But the total time was a long time to be stressing the Achilles and I seem to have weathered it well. I hope to crack 3 miles by the end of the year, which should be feasible.
My goal is to race an Olympic distance tri this summer. 6.2 miles seems daunting right now, but I have 6+ months to get there. I won’t be looking to compete (at least as far as the run is concerned), just complete the distance. If I do 10 min / mile, I’ll be happy with that. We’ll see…
Good luck!! Remember…patience is key. These things take a long time to heal. Lemme know if I can help in any way.
