My wife is German triathlete who has lived in the US for twenty years. She was head of product development for The Human Performance Institute and has helped write and publish many books. Her handle here is trirocket. I’ll tell her you will PM her with the details.
…sounds very good, can she please skype me for more details: roy.hinnen
.
Sure will. She did Roth last year, and we are both in for 2015.
This sounds like a very interesting opportunity, but having some experience with publishing, having the book translated and published (by a recognized publishing house) by this coming July will very likely be quite difficult.
A few questions & points to consider:
- Is the book already published in German?
- If yes to the first question, why not go with the same publisher?
- If no, do you already have a few publishing houses in mind?
- Which triathlete market are you trying to reach…primarily Europe, North America, or the entire international audience?
- Most larger publishing houses have a long list of books in the pipeline, so even if you had a finished translation today, it would be unlikely to have it out by summer.
- Smaller publishing houses are more flexible in this respect, but don’t always have the marketing to make sure people find the book (although the internet does mitigate this to an extent).
- If the book definitely has to be out in time for Roth, would e-publishing be an option? This would not preclude approaching an international publishing house at a later date.
- Have you budgeted enough for the translation? Good to excellent translators don’t grow on trees, and the international audience you are targeting most likely won’t expect perfection, but will demand an easy to read and flowing English. Please don’t skimp here.
- Last point regarding the translation: is the manuscript written in high German or is there a fair amount of one of the regional dialects (i.e. Swiss colloquial expressions) in the text? Having lived in Switzerland, I can confidently state that being a native German speaker doesn’t guarantee one understands the colloquial (even written) Swiss German expressions. If this is the case, would you be willing to assist in the translation of the expressions?
Ciao
I think I can sum up the content with the following translation:
“Go faster than North Americans.”
I’ll PM you with my address to send the cheque.
it is a smal publisher to concentrate in german speaking countries , book will come out at the roth challange in july 2015, i am also going to translated in in russian, since my wife is russian. i live in switzerland and have no idea about th us marked, all i know is the the “triathlon bible” from joe friel is a really good book, rest of the marked i dont know. point 5/6/7, you know a lot, if you want to support me with this would be great, i found on person to help me translate, the manuscript is in high german, i have enough money, please skype me for more info; roy.hinnen, many thanks for your support, roy
Dear Roy,
Sorry for the late response - I have been trying to get some urgent work done.
I am glad to hear that you found a translator for the text. Before you move forward, you will need to make a few important decisions regarding the text. As I mentioned before, to have a finished product in time for Roth is very unlikely unless you already know one of the publishing editors, and he/she is able to squeeze in the manuscript. However, in my experience, even this would presuppose that the translation is done by the end of March (at the very latest)! You will have to go over the translation in order to clear up any misunderstandings or imprecise formulations. Then the text will have to be formatted (which might take a little longer if you have a number of diagrams and pictures). Will you do the formatting or do you expect the publishing house to do it? Then you need to go over the proofs (Korrekturfahnen), and get them back to the publisher as soon as possible. Then, and only then, might you make the deadline. But this represents a perfect scenario, where at any stage in the process something might be derailed.
I am not trying to discourage you, but without having even contacted a publisher, I firmly believe that you should look at alternatives to meet your goal. This means creating either an E-book or “publishing on demand”. Do you only need 4-5 copies to show people at Roth or do you hope to sell 40-100 copies at the event?
Finally, as I mentioned in my first post, one does not exclude the other. You can (and probably should) approach a publishing house about the idea now, e.g. Rowohlt Verlag if you want a German language publishing house or Velopress if you want an international English speaking publisher, and at the same time investigate self-publishing options, e.g. Xlibris in order have a physical book for Roth.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Ciao
hello flemisch arrow, thanks**, no need to push the date. a proper translation will be the key, i have enough time for this, what is your tip, where and when do you publish a book in the us? velopress sound good, i will check it out, do you have some other publisher that you could recommend, if you want you can write me to my e-mail, it is easier for me, coach@royhinnen.ch, i really appreciate your feedback, greetings from snowy switzerland, roy**
