So today was my first race of the season and when I racked my bike coming into T2 I knocked over a guys bike that was on the same rack as mine. I would feel bad but he only had one brake lever on the bar so any more than a little shake would knock it over. I ended up reracking his bike and moving on to the run. Would I have been in the right if I had just left his bike since it was really his fault for not securing it well enough?
regardless of who was right and who was wrong, being nice is never a bad thing.
Well said
.
I would have just stolen his pedals.
Just kidding. Being nice is always the right thing to do… especially if time isn’t your #1 priority and your goal is to just get the race done.
He may not have racked it securely, but it didn’t fall over until you bumped it (vs. if the wind blew it over). You did the right thing.
One of the nice aspects of Tri is that the people who do it are generally pretty cool, which is not the case in every sport.
You definitely did the right thing…and you would, right now, probably feel like crap had you not…CUDOS
.
The thing to ask yourself is: What would I want someone else to do if it were my bike?
I think you made the right choice.
Kudos to you.

+1 for you did the right thing. Good on you!!

This was exactly what I thought in the couple seconds I had to think about it. Thing is I missed a podium spot by 42 seconds and while this was only a small fraction of that time gap it just made me think.
Maybe you missed a podium spot and that is what was supposed to happen. Maybe the guy you helped out PR’d the race and got to feel good telling his family all about it when he got home.
Nice job.
Dont worry about the podium finish, there are always more races. Next time, just get to T2 before anyone else on your rack and you have no problems.
You’ll never feel bad for doing the right thing, which you did. And the 5 seconds or so it cost you doesn’t amount to a hill of beans in a race. You’d still be right with whoever you were racing for position if that were the case…time easily made up if you really want it.
You did the right thing. That said, i have had someone who overcrowded the transition rack and litterally block my spot with his bike, so I flagged down the official to let her know he was in my spot, and then hoofed his bike. He was pissed afterwards, but the official told him off, because they had told him and his buddy the rack was ful before the race and to go elsewhere and they didn’t listen.
You seriously kicked his bike?
Interesting that both ends of the spectrum have checked in on this post. The nice guy and the incredibly self absorbed moron.
To the OP, if you are thinking and posting about having done the right thing, I think you’d be feeling a lot worse if you had have done the opposite…
Good on you.

Come to think of it he was the only one to pass me on the bike course and that was because I dropped my chain half way into the bike. Maybe if I knew how to shift right then he might be knocking my bike over.
"the incredibly self absorbed moron. "
Is there a bigger chicken-shit move than trying to damage a competitor’s bike because you are too much of a pussy to deal with the competitor?
If I were an official and saw that, the kicker would be out of the race and reported to US triathlon. Depending on how they handled the DQ, maybe reported to the cops as well.
I took what he said to mean he moved his bike, not kicked it. Maybe he’ll chime back in to let us know.
Well, that would make a lot more sense.
I didn’t kick his bike, I shoved it down the rack. I would have loved to launch it, but I just shoved it down the rack. He was pissed because it knocked over a water bottle or something. The only time I’ve ever kicked someone else’s bike was by accident as he ran into me in transition. And I still apologized to him even though it was his fault.

This is why I bring duct tape to my transition. When someone doesn’t secure their bike as I see fit I just tape it to the rack.
You did the right thing. Maybe someone helped you b4 and you dont realize it. It is sure to come back to you twofold. Karma is a wierd thing. I dont believe in much, but karma and santa claus I do. I have given my last spare tube to riders walking their bikes in front of my house or when I am 40 miles out on a ride and I have flattened 20 miles out later. Funny how someone always is around to give me a ride back or lift to nearest bike shop. As for taping someones bike to a transition rack that is just assinine. Don’t let me catch anybody taping my bike . After you hit the ground I will offer you a hand up and give you a choice to forget anything ever happened. You might want to correct/help a young kid or a newby but always in a respecful nice way.
