just read the article and I don’t get why they (the author) changed the person’s identity from male to female. I know the kid said they felt like a girl trapped in a boys body, but physically they were male. I just found it odd that the author changed the identity (was it just to create a stir, or help the “movement”?).
I also find it odd and a bit biased that they changed the individual’s quotes, which again was done to create a stir against a group of people-which in this case happens to be Christians. The quotes are…
“My mom started taking me to a therapist, but would only take me to christian therapists, (who were all very biased) so I never actually got the therapy I needed to cure me of my depression. I only got more christians telling me that I was selfish and wrong and that I should look to God for help.”
wouldn’t it be more responsible to actually just quote what the kid said instead of implying?

I’m not seeing any change there. The only thing they inserted was the which just indicates that the author of the article is acknowledging that the kid didn’t capitalize the word Christian.
It is a little odd that they referred to the kid using male pronouns and name during the first portion of the article, and using female pronouns and name during the latter portion.
The male pronouns are from the mother’s quotes.
And, I agree that the sic addition referred to Leelah’s incorrect spelling (lacking capitalization) of the word Christian. It does not appear that the her statements were altered “to create a stir”.
The journalist respectfully used gender neutral or female pronouns.
My understanding is that the most respectful thing is to use the pronouns that the transgendered person prefers. If the kid felt like a girl, she probably preferred female pronouns.
I, from this point on, am to be called King of the Known Universe because I believe thats who I was born to be. Anyone who doesnt is being disrespectful and will be mocked and shamed and called intolerant and mean along with sexist, bigot, and possibly racist.
Reading back through, I agree. The journalist chose not to use any pronouns for the first part of the story, referring to the kid by name, or as “the teen,” “the 17 year-old,” etc.

So then why not refer to “the teen” as “It” in order to protect “Its” self image?

No, they’re showing that there are people in this world that don’t fit into your and Rodred’s world view of what every person should be and how they should act. The idea that people choose these situations, knowing there are idiots who don’t understand or refuse to acknowledge what they’re going through, boggles my mind.

What’s normal?
I was one of those who ridiculed others who were different. While I didn’t ridicule them where they could hear it, it was still disrespectful and immature. To be honest, I changed because of my interactions in the LR.
As to the person in the article above. As you said, being transgender isn’t something that a normal person would choose for fun. I don’t know what drives someone to be transgender. But just because I can’t understand it does not mean that the person is making a choice that the rest of us wouldn’t make if we were in their shoes.
Edit to add. I see my mother-in-law responding the same way as the person’s mother. My m-I-l thinks that God can change anything if you have faith. She would totally think that a Christian therapist could “fix” what is wrong as long as she had “faith”
My daughter is 9. We had real concerns she was going to have gender issues. From the time she could talk she didn’t want anything to do with girly things, other than playing with dolls. This went on for a few years, and was prominent enough that totally unsolicited and without talking to my wife first the pediatrician asked her if she felt like a boy. To which she replied no. Then at some point she just switched to girly things. Now all she wears is pink, is into fashion, dance, etc. I have no idea how kids get a gender identity but seeing her path, I have no idea why anyone would be dismissive let alone cruel to a kid who ends up with a gender mismatched with their sex organs. It’s kind of like sexuality, I’m not sure how much it’s genetic, but regardless it doesn’t appear to me there is much of any choosing that a person does to end up the way they are.

Is allowing transgendered children (males with penises who think they are girls and vice versa) to use the opposite sex bathroom normal? How about makes who dress in women’s clothing. I’m sorry, I never bought into that argument. I’ll support gay rights all day long. Not the transgendered argument.
Let me pose something to you. As a sober alcoholic, I have spent time in rehab and many 12 step programs. I have known many people who could not cope with sobriety. Most simply go back to the addiction, but others including my cousin’s mother in law commit suicide. This is common enough that nearly anybody who has been through recovery has known somebody who has committed suicide or even contemplated it themselves. I’ve known four people who killed themselves and at least 10 others who tried. One cut a massive wound on her arm and swam out 100 yards hoping sharks would kill her. There is no article, and I’m sure this happens with much greater frequency than transgendered suicide. In most cases, the person is simply written off as a victim of mental illness. And perhaps that is the case. Perhaps their addiction was a result of coping or self medicating mental illness. Maybe the alcoholism perpetuated it. Doesn’t matter. Suicide is a selfish act.
There are certainly unique cases like where a child is born with both genitalia and the parents select the wrong course. But that is not a mental aspect. Nothing in the article suggest that was the case with this person.
That is how I view this. Mental illness that led to this suicide. Nothing special about it. Nothing unique about it. I’m still not convinced most gender identity issues are not simply mental illness.
