Traning camp @ Altitude

Not for me sadly; where would you go? if your considerations were

December pre Christmas
Snow can’t be an issue
S/B/R readily available (decent pool/s)
America (continental)

New Mexico? That’s all I got.

Los Alamos has the highest pool in the world, and many olympians from other countries come to train there. So I’d probably say los alamos new mexico is the best bet.

If you like radiation.

Radiation makes you smarter, right? Thanks for the suggestion. Looks like a solid choice.

Are you looking to train at altitude or live high/train low? If the latter…Tucson. Get cabin on Mt Lemmon (9000ft)/train in Tucson. Plus you have some nice trails for running/mt biking at altitude on Lemmon.

Well, like I said not really for me but I think the goal was just to be at altitude. Not sure which is better in terms of live high/train high or live high/train high or live low/train high, but really just looking for suggestions. A camp that includes myself is already on the table for early January in Tucson.

Albuquerque is pretty good. December can be cold in the morning, but the days warm up pretty nicely. Typically isn’t too windy, either. There are some city pools that are open 8-10 hours throughout the day (broken up in segments from 6 AM to 8 PM), so you can do doubles if you desire. I think a monthly pool pass is some $20-25.

Running is great that time of year, too.

I think that’s the winning choice so far; it was the one originally looked to before this ol’ thread was started. Any good/cheap places to stay?

Can’t be the highest in the world theres (or used to be) a pool and club in vail and also in copper mountain both are higher than the 7200 feet of los alamos
Back in 90’s did a number of dave scott camps there and thats where we swam. also theres one in Silverthorne.
Be willing to bet some other places over 7200 feet have lap pools(not just hotels but athletic clubs with 25 meter lap pools.

If it is only at 7200 feet there is no way it is ‘the highest pool in the world’. Breckenridge, Silverthorn, Vail, etc. all have pools. I live at 8500 feet and there are many pools in the Evergreen,Co area that are all over 7200 feet !

My buddy from college works there and said it was the highest, It might be the highest 50 meter pool. But I’m not sure/not willing to research.

Seems like I read something recently about Flagstaff being pretty good. I can’t remember if it was in a mag or online.

Altitude makes it tough if you want the North America. Why at altitude in December, if you don’t mind me asking?

Never been done before so it’d be for fun (and the good training environment). Plus, there is no off-season.

Flag gets pretty cold in Dec. and can get quite a bit of snow. That being said this is a “la mina” year which “usually” means a warmer and drier winter.

A chick might be my guess

Ha, nice one!

There are lots of apartments by the foothills which give you great access to training. I’m guessing that they do monthly leases, but don’t really know what the rates would be. Maybe $500, maybe more, maybe less. Yeah, I’m helpful.

Worse things have been done for those reasons. I won’t be going unfortunately.

Haha, any and all info is helpful. I don’t turn away any information, unless it makes me look bad.

Tucson is my place of choice.

  • great weather–arm warmers and a vest are more than enough. If you ride later in the day just bring a base layer and short sleeves.
  • altitude of 2700+’ which is high enough to give some benefit but not so high as to limit training ability or cause ill-effects–or be too cold.
  • ability to train up to 8500’ on Mt Lemmon. And if the weather’s bad, wait til tomorrow.
  • Many many trail runs at 3000-3500’
  • more pools than you can swim in, they are outside, and they are filled with the likes of those you just watched in Kona last week
  • The Tucson Endurance Performance Center is there for recovery and training support

My camp is 10-17 March. I also set up camps for others, either groups or individuals. I live here and have for a long time.
So far my camps are 100% in sending athletes home with sire muscles and sunburns in Feb/Mar.
