I’ve recently signed up for Trainingpeaks and synced my account with all my Garmin files. I’m wondering if there’s a way that I can backfill/recalculate my TSS/Threshold values now that they’re all uploaded. This issue I’m having is that all my workouts are showing as mostly in Zone 5c for runs, since the default threshold is lower than my actual threshold. Basically, now that I know what my actual run threshold is, I want TP to go back through my history and recalculate everything to the correct zones, TSS scores, etc.
I tried the google, but the only explanations for this are for classic version, and for some reason whenever I go “switch to classic” it flips me back to modern.
I don’t believe you can go back and recalculate zones etc. They don’t seem to timestamp paces/power… and use those.
I think this will work
You can do a bulk export of your workouts from TP really easily
So for example, do a bulk export of 2012, 2013, 2014 in different files
Wipe out all your 2012 workouts in TP
Set threshold values as you believe they were in 2012
Re-Import 2012
Repeat for 2013, 2014 setting proper thresholds before each load
I think bulk export and loading is easy enough that this could be not so painful
There should be a button to choose to “recalculate” all TSS data. I’m not 100% sure how far it goes back. I thought it could go back to the beginning. I think you do this from the tab where you set your zones.
In the future, as you change you threshold paces/power/hr it only alters workouts after you change the value. You W/kg “records” also work this way as well on the historical power profile table that displays the best in each CPxx value.
From what I can tell, thresholds are date dependent. I’ve updated my threshold HR (don’t have PM yet) for each sport based on history, except that those values only seem to apply to today.
For example, if I create a workout for today, HR zones will be based off of the new threshold values (164 bpm), however if I move that workout to another date, zones are based off the old value (148 bpm).
Looks like I’m stuck with these zones from past data. I think my mistake was not having it set to auto-update when I did the bulk upload. That and perhaps timing: Garmin’s auto 30 day sync falls neatly into the start of my off-season, so using that as training data is hit and miss. (I’ve since done a bulk upload using Tapiriik and then manually changed values based on historical data from when I was training)
Edit: I’ve also managed to get back into classic mode, where I set it to “Recalculate TSS” on the Performance management chart. From the looks of it, this is just on the chart itself, and not on my workout history. TSS seems to remain at old values (ie: elevated) in the calendar.

I just did a test. I loaded a bike file to Oct 17 2011. It gave me a TSS of 65
I then set my FTP to 100, recalced my zones
I then loaded the same workout to Oct 17 2011 and it gave me a TSS of 200 something
It uses the currently set FTP to calculate TSS
So if you set your zones and then import the files (don’t move them, import them) I am pretty sure it will work
Thanks! The mass upload/download trick did the thing! All my 2014 data are set to current TSS/threshold values. The only snag was that downloading and reuploading those files removed the title from all my workouts. No matter, data is now usable.
Next question: going forward, I expect TP to auto update these zones/thresholds, as I have it set. I get that it does this if I improve (higher pace / threshold HR), but does it do this if I lose fitness? I’m going into a rest period where I expect to lose overall fitness.
Given that the HR/Pace curves are based on “Last 3 months,” will it auto-update once my personal bests fall off? Or do I have to go in and update that manually (say, in January, when I resume “serious” training, when current thresholds will be useful)?

I would not auto update.
Couple of reasons. If your HR monitor goes wonky (happens regularly) you will have TP auto updating based on garbage.
I remember once I had left my Garmin running when I was in the plane and I got an email that my threshold pace had improved to 600km/h.
You can have it send you an email, and then you decide if it’s valid or not.
Funny you bring it up. When I set my FTP to 100 to do that test. I uploaded and it sent me an email that I needed to update my FTP since I was better than 100:-)
Good point about the HR monitor issue and turning off the auto-update feature. I suppose what I’ll do is retest in January once I resume structured training and then use those values (I don’t care so much about between now and then for TSS). Odd though that it expects you to keep improving - I would have thought that it would have, at some point, recognized that we all slow down at one point or another, whether through less training, age, or whatever…

Don’t use auto threshold update. If you Garmin get some junk values it will suddenly set you threshold run pace to a 3:00 mile. You really should do regular testing or just adjust it yourself based on performances in training and races.

Yeah, Garmin HR straps are famous for HR spikes which can mess up HR zones too. Notifications are nice, and it’s easy to spot the errors in the data, but then manually update zones based on regular testing.
