Anyone workout with a four legged training partner? What kind of pets do you guys have?
My Greyhound loves to run, but sprinting is more his thing. He’s not all that into this endurance stuff.
I thought this was pretty funny!

Build core strength with your cat:
According to my dog training book I should restrain my Doberman from running more than 90 miles in a day. Assuming that distance doesn’t limit you too much, she didn’t have any problem keeping up my pace for any distance. Her max was 45 miles in one day at an 8’-9’ per mile pace.
Note: don’t get a Dobe unless you are an experienced dog owner and know what you are getting into.
Why don’t more people train with budgies?
I have a greyhound and was thinking about this last night when we were doing our little run. When I first got her in March, she couldn’t/wouldn’t even run around the block. Now we are very comfortable going for 7km runs together. Like anything else, they have to work up their endurance too!! I wondered what is the best dog to run with…I think my greyhound does pretty well!!!

I need to more often. I took my “Lab” (really just a “large black dog” that looks a lot like a Lab. He can’t even spell AKC) for a 3-mile jog and after mile 2 it was dragging a furry anchor. I should get a steady rotation going with my 3 dogs, they are all sporting type breeds.
I tried running with one of my cats once. It didn’t last too long (cats have no concept of pace). It was weeks before she spoke to me again, in polite terms anyway. I won’t repeat that mistake.
=)
Is there a special supplement that helps you hear the cat speak to you?
Yes. It’s a combination of drugs and alcohol. Lots of drugs and alcohol.
Hah. You guys think I kid. Those who own cats know that they have a language all their own. It just takes a little patience and understanding, that’s all. For example after the “run” mine went on about things like “eviscerating”, "and “while you sleep”, and things of that nature. It was a while before I slept with both eyes shut I can tell you that much.
tri_gear,
I cannot even imagine my Greyhound running that far! If I take him out with me he wants to sprint in the beginning and drag me with him. Then he suddenly hits the wall and I’m dragging him. When I put my running shoes on he looks at me with this look that says, “Pleeeaase don’t make me go, I’m retired remember?” Now my Long-haired Miniature Dachshunds, those little short legged dogs can run!! The cat just wants to make sure she gets fed before I leave. The walk from the couch to the food dish is her workout for the day.

Sounds like a lot of my buddies.
I train with my miniature Dachshund. He often pushes the pace on me. His legs may only be 4 inches long, but he can run a sub 18min. 5k, the little bastard.
my run partner. (For the love of God, someone please tell me if you see only a red x )

yup, just a red x…but thanks, i’m sure it was going to be good!!

I have a 7 month old Golden Retreiver, and I’ve gotten into the habit of taking her out for a mile or a mile and half every morning before my regular morning run. I think she’s beginning to look forward to our runs together! I plan to increase the distance that she runs with me to about 3 miles, but I don’t think I’ll go too much over that.
Our lazy cats don’t even catch the mice in the kitchen, so my chances of getting them out for a run are pretty slim (unlike the cats themselves). ![]()
let’s try this again (let me know if I’m still pic challenged)
.
Both of your posts work fine for me.
I see you too know the joys of running with a Dobe.
My aussie (australian shepard) is an excellent running companion. She is particularly good at running off-leash. We go on 8 mile morning runs around the park, and long weekend trail runs together. Now that she’s 9, I limit her to 14 miles on the trail, and have her on glucosamine. I would recommend a herding breed for endurance and smarts.
I thouhght that pic was a chia pet!
